4wd disconnect rebuild

Something not working right?

by TangoBravo » Mon Sep 03, 2012 4:31 pm

Well I purchased what was supposed to be a working 4wd disconnect but upon installation it is certainly not a working disconnect. Does anyone know of a one stop shop to get the rebuild parts. Got to admit I'm kinda pissed after the cost of the claimed working disco and now the rebuild kit I could of had a whole new unit. Guess that's the chance you take when you get a part from someone on here verses just going and buying one.

You had a problem with a seller on THIS SITE with the condition not being as advertised? Did you inspect it and grease if necessary before installation?

If so, and they didn't make it right, we (site owners) need to know about it.

Not happening on our watch. Need both participants to PM me and JamesDowning.

Buy a new ATP from Ebay, is what I'd do.

Well Roadie I'm going to hold judgment until I find out exactly why the one purchased is not working. I did inspect it and regreased it, everything seemed to function fine on my work bench but after installing it the disco is certainly not working. So until I can save up the money for a new one I'm stuck.

Pull the actuator, and push in the hole with something like a socket extension to see how the spring feels. That should allow you to also feel what's happening with the shift fork and the splined collar as you rotate the hub. I accidentally overgreased mine when I rebuilt it, and until the grease redistributed itself, the collar was not sliding swiftly into position.

You do know the shift fork may not be moving, but the actuator is fully extending but its button (pushing part) is spring loaded so you won't get a flashing light on the mode switch? It's designed that way for when the disconnect grease is cold in the winter, but you don't want to have a broken actuator. Its force is limited by an internal spring. If you overgreased it, that may be the issue.

Did you take pics as you disassembled, greased, and bench-tested it? Would have been essential in a case like this.

And schedule time to take it out and inspect it again.

When I pulled the actuator to test it I attempted to push on the piece in the hole like you just said and it is locked up. It doesn't move, I could have over greased it. I will drip e it for a bit and see if it improves. As far as pictures no my phones is crap and I don't have a camera right now.

Well first and foremost I would like to appologise to Nakashige for the way I came off and for insinuating that the part he sold me did not work. My frustration got the best of me and I am sorry. Tonight I removed the disco from the truck, opened it up removed all grease, regreased, reassimbled, reinstalled and test drove. It is working as it should, I can only assume that I over greased as I didnt do anything else this time but use less. So again I appologise.

good news Robert, this makes sense. Thinking back now when you greased it the first time if there were issues/worn items you likely would have noticed. Glad you got it working. The good news is this history will be valuable to the next guy who tears into his disconnect.

James, do you think we can add a comment to the disconnect article about not over-greasing it?

Yeah, it was confusing because everything looked good. It wasn't untill Roadie talked about overgreasing that I realized that was even possible. I'm glad I didn't just purchase a new disconnect just because I over greased this one, that could have been costly.
