Oil pump issue? Very strange.

Something not working right?

My truck has been running fine, last major service was having the water pump replaced the bearings went bad this was almost a year ago.

This past weekend I was packing friday night for a trip to the beach. I was sitting my truck with the AC blasting setting up my laptop and GPS. I had just moved the shift lever from Park all the way back to 1st then back to park to make sure the mount for my laptop wasnt in the way (which i suspect is completely unrelated). When I glanced back at the dash I saw "Oil Pressure Oil" then it flashed to "Stop engine" glanced at the oil gauge it was at ZERO. I panicked shut the car off and popped the hood. Saw nothing out of the ordinary. Checked the oil, it was full. Jumped under the truck to look for leaks or something, the only thing coming down from the truck was moisture from the AC compressor. No signs of oil or anything.

I started the car back up a few min later, everything was fine no Check engine light, oil pressure normal (over 40), everything looked fine. I was going on very little sleep and started to wonder if I was just seeing things, or something.

Drove hundreds of miles out to the beach everything was normal.

Went to start it one morning while there and noticed the same thing again. Check engine light came on, oil pressure gauge read 0, and I saw "Oil pressure low" on the display. Stopped the engine, started it again and then it was fine. No oil leaking, the Check engine light wasnt on after restarting the engine.

I dont know if I'm getting a short or something in the wiring or if the computer just throwing this randomly or something. Or if its some other strange random issue.

A question though, if your truck throws a Check Engine Light which then goes away, will the last code displayed show up when you have it read? I might get a chance to take it to autozone or some place and have it read this week.

Its very strange, short of the oil pump failing to start sometimes I cant imagine what it could be. Any input would be appreciated.

I suggest you change the pump now.

I've never had an issue with mine on the TB but read a lot about them on jeeps when I was troubleshooting a similar issue. I know these things aren't jeeps but I imagine a lot of the logic carries over.

On the jeeps there is a pump, a sender/switch and the gauge.
Usually what went bad on them was the sender/switch. The sender usually screws into the block near the oil filter.

There was a way to test the gauge by I think sending it 12V, full 12 V would peg it or something. I con't recall for sure so experts chime in.

If the gauge was good it was usually the sender.
The only way to really check that was with a mechanical gauge but the odds were high enough on the sender most folks just replaced them.

Another option is some debris in your oil, a bad oil filter or something of that nature.
If I was running an Orange Fram filter that would be the first thing I would change.

I'm curious what the code may be, maybe P0520?

If it's throwing a code, then clearing the light, it may be able to be read, depending on the reader. Some don't read saved codes - like the Scangauge. For the Scangauge to read the code, I think it has to be the active code.

Just ordered a bluetooth OBDII module I'll pull up the code with torque this weekend hopefully and guess we'll go from there.

I doubt its your pump, they are very mechanical and when they go bad, they are bad. You could hook up a actual pressure guage in place and see exactly where your at, but I would think its your sending unit...

Wonder if our the computer could tell you the sending unit is bad. It may not have a code for that.
