Tail Light Issue

Something not working right?

by cbbryan » Wed May 26, 2010 9:57 pm

Recently a buddy of mine informed me that my right tail light is out, but my brake light is fine. Yesterday I replaced the bulb and the tail light is still a no go. I know that all three bulbs in the tail light assembly are the same and they each have two filaments. After replacing the old one with a new one the tail light still doesn't come on , but the brake light still works. The left side is completely fine and everything on the right side works except the tail light.
What is the problem and how do I fix it?

Did you check the fuse? The one that you want is located under the back seat, and if I remember correctly, each side uses its own fuse. I assume you are talking about the parking light bulb, right?

Somebody steal your Owner's Manual?

Rear fuse #17 for the right, rear #14 for the left.

Or the circuit board.

Does rear fuse 17 operate both the tail light and the brake light?

The circuit board is a real common problem. Also, make sure the new bulb is good. I had to replace the new bulb in order to get it to work one time :shoot:

Did you check the bulb you replaced to see if the filament was damaged?
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Check the signal wire with your multimeter to ensure it has a 12V signal. Parking lamp signal should be the brown one coming into the driver side, and the brown/white wire into the pass. side tail light assembly.

If you need a new tail light circuit board, I will have one coming off my broken assembly... the new light has its own board.

I already have a new circuit board, but now I have a new problem too. The wire that plug in to the circuit board (pigtail as the mechanics say) in now useless. The male end of the circuit board were so corroded that they broke off in the female end of the plug. New pigtail/plug $110. I think I'll just risk a ticket; I just got a new inspection sticker anyway.

You can get aftermarket connectors w/ pigtails. Never pay a dealer for an item like that. Google for it.

Did't have to get a new pigtail after all, my dad was able to get the broken pins out of the original one so all I had to do was hook it up to the new circuit board.

I was gonna say, definitely don't pay 110 for a pigtail, jeez you could nearly make that up yourself for 5bucks from radioshack

Hi there! I'm a newbie and to the forum and was wondering if you were able to solve the problem with the taillights. I had a friend who is experiencing the same problem with her taillights. She had it brought to a mechanic, check the fuse bulbs and even the stop light switch but it seems all fine. Now the mechanic said it might be possible on the circuit board. But we both want to check first if it is really problem before we replace it so that's why we ended on this forum searching for answers. Any updates on this post?

Yeah, it was fairly easy. I did have to get a new circuit board because the pins broke off in the wiring harness. I was able to take the end of the wiring harness apart, the plastic end piece pops out. I then dug out the old corroded pins, cleaned it out, and put the harness back together. I then attached it to my new circuit board and tested it then put then re-secured the tail light assembly. I have had no issues since then. The circuit board was less than $30 at auto zone or advanced I can't remember which one, but that was the only cost I had in fixing it. Your friend may have a different issue. Mine was corroded which is why it didn't work to begin with and when i tried t replace it it the pins broke off.
