Rear Shocks For What?

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Jblazin82 » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:44 pm

I have a 2004 tb ext 4wd. I'm going to use marks new lift and z71 springs in the rear. I have been looking and searching this site for a couple days but I'm not the best searcher. I know its on here somewhere and at lease one of you will tell me to search more. But I need to know what rear shock to order. Not really what shock but what application. Im looking at either the skyjacker, bds, or ????.

Thanks for the help!!!

I know BDS and Skyjacker are both very popular on here. So i presume it comes down to personal preference. I'm a fan of BDS's "no fine print warranty". Plus I've been running the BDS for about 7 months now, and I love them.

The skyjacker PN is H7030 for the standard shock or H8030 for the gas shock.
I got mine of of Amazon for a little under $50 each for the H8030.
If you go the BDS route you don't have to add washers as a spacer on the bottom shock mount.
I think it took me like 16 7/16 grade 8 washers per side.

I think the BDS option is the best because they fit perfectly and you will not have to use washers and they offer you 2 types of shocks depending on how much you want to spend ..
These are 2" longer , exactly what you need with the lift :
1. is 5500 series $47,32 each
2. is 2.0 series $105.81 each

this is the link to BDS : http://bds-suspension.com/product-display?ma=5&mo=14

You may not want to go any farther then this. 2" is about the limit without changing other vital parts.

Marks rear lift is 2" plus z71 is 1.5. Are the bds 2" lift shock long enough for this combo.

That is, pretty much, the standard set-up with many members.

Downward travel needs to limited to some point. If we go beyond this brake lines would need to be changed at the very least.

The BDS 5500s have work well for me. The step up to 2.0s is probably worth the money though, especially if you travel fast over washboard roads or desert.

Not to burst anyone's bubble on what was said below;

This does not apply to their shocks as stated by the manufacturer, as was discussed in this thread http://forums.offroadtb.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=870&start=100

You don't have to use washers because they provide you with the spacers that are needed. And Skyjacker offers 2 types of shocks as well, the hydraulic filled and nitrogen filled.

I just upgraded to the Z71's on top of 2" SMAXX spacers in the rear with Skyjacker N8030 shocks and it looks like I will need to disco the rear sway bar as the drivers side upper trailing arm will interfere with the swaybar link. After that is eliminated, it still appears that the brake lines will be stretched before the shocks limit the droop of the rear axle. Are the brake lines ok? Does the panhard bar limit the downward travel before the shock do?

You might want to loosen/move the brake line clamps. The panhard bar doesn't contribute to limits - it just swings the axle to the right as the suspension extends. Its only purpose is to try to keep the axle centered left-right.

I'm gonna guess he's talking about the sway bar. I know on mine the sway bar limits out at around the same length as the shocks, so there's food for thought.

Well my upper strut mount bushings on my passenger side have deteriorated and fallen off. BDS is sending me new ones at no cost. So no complaints, still.
