GM #15125887 on indefinite backorder

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by MrSmithsTB » Fri May 27, 2011 1:18 pm

Just thought that I would let everyone know. If you are considering purchasing or have already placed an order, they are on backorder from the factory and there is no expected release date as of right now.

I guess we used up all their service stock. The service guys at GM must be scratching their heads thinking "we didn't even make any TBs with the 87 springs!".

:Iagree: I don't think I've seen anyone who had 87, 88, or the 89 springs stock... where did they come from?

GMpartsdirect was the only source I thought was reliable for them, since dealers only order based on your VIN. I ordered them 2 weeks ago and the order had yet to update. I called them the other day and was simply told they are backordered and nobody know when they will be available again.

I order my 87's from www.gmpartsshop.com back in March. I was informed then that they would have to order them directly from GM other than that I had no problems just took a few extra days to reach me.

Let me add that the back order status is direct from gm, not just the retailer.

I think 88's are cheaper anyway, aren't they? $55 each shipped IIRC.

Can't remember exact price, but I remember at the time the 87's being the cheapest. And only costing around $80 total, give or take...

Trying to order me a set of front springs now. I have a call into GMPartsShop and an email into GM Parts Direct (they wont let you call according to site lol) waiting to find out availability of 87's or 88's. Hoping a miracle happens and I can order 87's. Last thing left to order for me as I just ordered my new rims, BDS shocks and Bilstein struts this morning. Ill post any info I get for you guys looking as well.

I paid $45.51 each for 88's. I ordered Tuesday the 12th, not sure when I'll get them. Gmpartsdirect.com says allow 7-10 for shipping which kinda blows. I should spent the extra $$$ for faster shipping.

When I was looking for my front springs I contacted them and they said the 88's are special order items and thats why they take that extra 7-10 days. Luckily I found my 87's on here.

Most of the stiffer springs are special order. I am actually glad that the 87s were backordered when I wanted them. I did not want to use 88s with Marks old kit. It retains the stock upper strut mount and I see that as being prone to fail. This kept me from purchasing springs which led me to go the way of the body lift again. Since IFS is inherently weaker than a real axle, I would much rather keep the stress off of the components while gaining tire clearance. Now, I will pony up for some 86 springs when the time comes for a bumper from mike, but it will only be to handle the added weight.

i was reading over on the OS (it was painful) that the 88s are no longer available either... are we now down to choosing just between an 86 or an 89?
i was looking at welding up a new front bumper but i'm not sure i want to rock 89s without the added weight.

I don't know if you want to run 89s even with a bumper. At least not with what I have been seeing Mike Peters has been going through.

yeah, it was the right hand side that kept breaking on him. once down by the body of the shock and then the second time the threads at the top broke, from what i understand. He also mentioned he had all new parts on that side and he thought he'd been hit. and guys were wondering if his suspension was tweaked.

aren't there several other guys running the 89s without incident?

here's his thread for reference

I don't think anyone is running 89s without an aftermarket bumper such as Mikes. It would be foolish to run them without the extra weight in the front.

The springs I specified in my Icons were 45% stiffer than the 89s (650 lbs/in, instead of 440), and were fantastic at high speed whoopsies in the desert and lumpy trails, but they ended up snapping a shock shaft on extension once. I haven't completed the rebuild with redesigned lower mounts yet. Heavy loaded vehicle, custom bumper, winch, underbody armor, and HiLift all up front.
