Tahoe are ~1.5" for the rear

The 87 and 89 refer to the end of the GM part number. Read the above links for more info. I've not kept up much with availability but I seem to remember it being somewhere south of fat chance.

87 springs are no more. you can get 88's or at least i did. you can get 89's as well

When I was looking 88s were gone. There's a thread about it. 89s aren't advisable unless you're prepared for the potential repercussions. Bumper and armor is recommended with 89s.
Keep searching and reading. A lot of the info is there. We're happy to talk about things/ideas that haven't been covered.

It seems that the problems that come from 89s stem from combining them with Mark's 3" lift. Using them by themselves is fine, and I suspect using them with a smaller lift (Rough Country, BDS 2") may be fine as well.

Just throwing that out there.

Donny is right, I didn't get real specific. There's another guy here that is using 89s with Marks 2.5 and hasn't had my problems. In my case it is a 3" lift with 89s and only an oilpan skid that resulted in kaboom after I hit a significant "road repair".
I've got a thread documenting the specifics.

i'm leanin' more and more towards the 2 1/2 lift from mark (lift meister).
