285/75/16 BFG All Terrains

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by MrSmithsTB » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:54 am

Falling in 3rd behind The Roadie and Foosh, I've gotten myself a set of lt285/75/16 BFG All Terrains. There were a lot of contributing factors, but when everything is said and done these were the best decision. I know you all think I am crazy for stepping down from M/Ts, but it is with excellent reason. Employment status, the recent junking of my beater which I can't replace right now, upcoming inspection, and a lot more commuting.... just to name a few. Now for the deal. It was made with the understanding that these tire had "about 30%" tread remaining. I was wary, but figured for the short drive it wouldn't be a big deal to walk away empty handed. When I got there, visual inspection of these tires puts tread somewhere between 40-50% with all even wear and no visual defects. I managed to score this set of four for $70. :friday: So now, I can get them mounted/balanced, and sell off my M/Ts for what they are worth, coming out ahead of the game financially and not having to fret about inspection AND maintaining a certain degree of trail worthiness.

 But I'll get more use out of these than you do yours :poke: :poke:

It's all good, holmes. Now I have 33s with a matching full size spare and no worries for at least a year and a half.

That's 40-50% tread?

Looks like 10% compared to an M/T.

I'm also going to change your thread title... noone has any idea what "Oh, no. Now I've done it." means. :poke:

You ought to measure the tread depth. I got a gauge off ebay for about 5 bucks delivered. I would say they are under 20% tread, unless it is just the angle. Are they hitting the wear bars?

It's just the angle and the fact that its my phone taking the pic. They measured in at a hair over 8/32nds. Load range D has a new tread depth of 17/32nds. That's about 45% tread life, dudes.

Thats a great buy then. :woot: How much do you payand where have you found to mount and balance them? I cant find anywhere except one of the big tire stores to mount and balance used tires and the one that does charges 20 bucks each even thought the rim was bare already.

I just mounted a couple 285-70-17 on rims for spares by hand :mechanic: , but need to take them somewhere to get balanced. Not really that hard to do and cuts costs and figure they dont know i just mounted them used, so they should balance them as any other tire.

However, isn't the common sense replacement standard something like 4/32"? So, 4/32" = 0% tread?

But nonetheless, not a bad deal!

2/32nds for mostly dry conditions, 4/32nds for wet conditions, and 6/32nds for snowy conditions.

The wear bars are a good replacement time and i think they are 3 or so 32nds

Ah, who needs wear bars? The only indication of needing new tires I need is when you got stuck in really basic light mud and are doing nothing but spinning tires.

LOL, y'all. I'm happy with the purchase. So much so that I know 100% that I will not regret dismounting the Firestones. I already have a bite on the sale of them and they aren't even off of the truck yet. They will get me through inspection and provide safety and off road reliability until I'm working again and can go all out on a whole new setup.

I called around to a few places today and managed to find one that will mount and balance for $15 per tire, and is taking me tomorrow morning. Everyone else has been saying $30-$40 except Walmart, and I am NOT taking anything there. I was going to mount them myself, but I don't want to worry about breaking the bead/dismounting the MTs. Plus, I have yard work to do. :x

You'll like them, they may not get as good traction in the mud, but they'll be alot better on gas than the others. I haven't got to try them in 4x4 so hopefully you have them on for the 5th. I'm gonna bite the bullet and put my truck in the shop. :shoot:

They'll be on before lunch tomorrow, and I can't wait. :excited: And I have a race to the finish for the sale of the Firestones. I might even have someone meeting me at the shop to take em as they are removed. Fun stuff.

My walmart said they will not do used tires. Curious if this is the national policy or just someone too lazy to mount them for me that day.

Lets see some pics. A few years ago the bfg at's actually beat out a couple mt's in one of the magazine tests in rocks and sand and tied some of the mts in mud. You got some good tires there.

Yeah the tires are really good for sand and rock bc they have a lot of tread that small and moves with the tires, problem is when it comes to mud they don't clear themselves out nearly as good as as an agressive my would. Ask brendan why a really good mt is important...

Notice any difference in wet grip? I noticed that your old firestones had one of the highest wet ratings of the M/Ts on tire-rack.
