Yes, this is specifically the reason that dragsters use bias ply tires, even though radials are more stable and have better traction characteristics. With bias ply, you get a fatter, shorter tire for the launch, that turns into a taller (for gear ratio change) and thinner (for aerodynamics on an open-wheel car and rolling resistance) as speeds go up.

Watch bias ply tires work in the rocks. Amazing how they conform.

You should watch the rock bouncers with the 43 inch SX most of them run. You will see them heat them up on the rocks on purpose to get the tire to act how they want. Crazy stuff those tires can do.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

I heard it explained a little different but think they were talking about the same thing but not such a technical description (was on tv) . IIRC they used the lower pressure tires so they would flex as shown below and cause less wheel spin from high torque at launch.

Like this... I googled "top fuel dragster tire distortion"

It is pretty amazing that you can get a square tire or pentagon at those speeds/ torque, etc. LOL

Yes it is, the power they put out of those motors are pretty amazing too.
