Tire shopping is Tough.....

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

I would expect the larger the tire the larger the variances in size/weight etc also. For someone running a 32 it won't be as extreme as someone running a 35.

NOT sent from an IPhone.

Does that say you got terrible mileage out of them?

No, I mean I have gotten close to 30k on the Pumas I had put on here, and without the tire on the roof I had been able to get almost 18 mpg after lift and other tinkering (averaged 15 before). I had previously bought a set of Dayton Timberland A/T and they lasted me about the same mileage and cost quite a bit more after everything. I would still be running my Pumas till the end of the year if at some point between alignment and inspection my front tires hadnt been inflated to over 50 psi(Load range E rated for 80 psi but I had been running them at 40-45 because thats what wore well, and over 50 because thats how high the gage I used went). I do recommend Treadwright to anyone who asks me about tires.

They arnt going to last you 50K+. They arnt really meant to, they arnt a new tire. But they do last long enough to make up for what you save in money. I wouldnt run the tire if I didnt think it was safe to. All my opinion though.

Used tires are also a cost beneficial way to go. Just to throw something else in the ring.

This is true, if you know a good used tire shop you may even be able to get a matching set. I did once and they still had 1/2 the tread left. Stay away from the side of the road places with the stacks of used tires though, lots of dryrot issues with those tires. Price should be around $25-$40 mounted and balanced for a good used tire.

Learn how to read the date code, and always check it before buying used tires. Just because they look good, doesnt mean that they are. They could have been in billy bob's barn on his old truck for 15 years before he went and got new ones.

Well I'm seriously thinking Cooper S/t Maxx, Goodyear Duratrac and Grabber At2
I asked my tire shop and they said it would be $290 a tire installed for the St Maxx he did say that its one Hel of a tire. I did find it on the internet for $204, but it would be cheaper for me just to pay the $290. It 55lbs a tire, Load E 10Ply and 3ply Sidewall. Would I be better off with a lower ply? Out of all of this I do want to have a spare but money comes into play. 4 St maxx 4 spacers i'm looking at 1379 well over my budget.

He mentioned that he could get the Hankook Dynapro ATM for 150 a tire.

I'm totally new to this buying a tire thing so please bear with me.

The S/t Maxx is a good tire, I wish they made them when I got my Coopers. I have the old ATRs with 10,000 miles on 3 of em and actually just bought a new one today, but that's another story... Tread on them seams to have lasted pretty well comparing the 3 old to the one new, which is why I only bought 1 new one instead of 2. At any rate that is the route I would go, it is a good cross between an AT and a MT.

You find a bag of money?

$290 is VERY expensive for a tire. Mount and balance shouldn't be more than $20 a tire, which leaves his cost of ~$270 per tire. That's a top tier cost... I'd keep looking. I have yet to pay more than $650 for a set of 5 tires (you can sometimes find good low-mileage used tires on craigslist - that was my source for my last set).

I don't think there is any way I could justify ~$300 per tire. The idea of $200 per tire is hard enough for me to swallow. I am sure there are instances where the ~$300 tire outperforms other tires but I would prefer to spend that other money on armor or a locker etc.

I'm on my fifth set of tires at 100K miles, and it took until my third set to go over $200 each. I didn't have enough experience on trails that required extraordinary MTs until a couple of years on lesser tires. For starting out in a region with your sorts of trails I would be looking at training tires rather then beginning right out with fire-breathers.

I have looked on Craigslist, http://nmi.craigslist.org/for/2995898840.html Not a whole lot of At.

I can even jstify 200 a tire.... Makes me want to go back to Treadwright.... As a side note my fellow co-worker got 4 S/t for 740, plus additional 50 to mount and balance...

My biggest thing is to have a spare amongst all of this...

I called around for some tire prices all of the prices I list include Mounting/Balanceing

S/t: Shop A wants $1,040 for 4, Shop B $984, And Shop C wants $1,000 something
At2: Shop A wants 1100 Something, Shop B wants 814.36 and Shop C wants 813

The At2 is a 4ply, S/t 6ply, These are the current tires I'm looking at. I'm leaning on the At2 more so. What are you thoughts on the At2? Is there any advantage of running a 6ply vs a 4ply?

Caleb, a lot of folks are running a 255/75/17 which is a tad taller and a tad narrower(.4'). There has been a lot of discussion about which is better taller/skinnier vs. shorter/wider with good arguments from each side. Unless you frequent beach sand I doubt most folks would find a situation where they would notice .4 inch narrower tire difference.

It might be that tire will work for you and you may find a broader selection/lower price.

I don't plan on Beaching with it, as there really arn't any places around here that I can drive on the beach! But 265 are more of a common tire from what I've been told. So if I run into a problem most shops should carry em.

Its the Standard Load, 4ply and 2ply Sidewall.

From all of the reading I've done, everyone loves em. Or should I wait on the tires and get the Rust fixed?

Thoughts?? Need em FAST!!

Thanks Guys!!
