So far from what I've seen they're pretty good tires, my only concern is the sidewalls, they don't seem to have much protection or an side lugs for when you air down.

This is one of those times that you have to flat-out ask the people who would be getting them for you whether they got them or not... tell them you need to know because it's a safety issue. Problem solved.

I might just get the 265/70/16s and hope I get the spacers. Either way those seem plenty big enough.

fair enough, but I just think that if you get those, you might end up regretting it if you get spacers and realize you could have had taller tires. I know I sometimes wish I had 32-33's instead of the 31.55" tires I have now.

true. I will still probably get the smaller ones though, keeping in mind I stll have to deliver in this thing until I can talk my parents into the beater car idea.

Ah yes... there is always that consideration...

Just noticed, you can pick up Nitto Terra Grapplers for less than the Coopers in that size... you also have the option of Toyo Open Country A/T's as well... I didn't look at either of these because of price considerations, but they are definitely worthy contenders.

Current update: Tires are sitting at probably 11k miles, still look pretty much like 90% or more of their tread. I'll post pics, but still pretty happy with them. If they were cost-effective in 255/85/16, I'd get them over the KM2's when I change tires eventually, but as it stands now, the KM2's will be my next tire, simply due to price.

Likes:
*Noise Level hasn't grown with wear
*Tires handle like new (broken-in) tires
*Sidewalls have taken some beatings and still no issues with air loss

Dislikes:
*I'm still not sure that this sidewall is super heavy duty material, and I can't put my full confidence in it
*I'm getting some very slight chunking and tearing of the tread, but don't have any pieces coming off, more feathering than anything
*They're significantly more expensive in the 255/85 and ST-c (cut resistant) versions, so I will not be looking into them when I upgrade in size.

Conclusion: I view the Cooper Discoverer S/T tires in 265/75/16 as a semi-rugged, hybrid tread design tire, which is best used on dirt trails where there is likely to be mud sometimes in the year, where sidewall protection isn't a large concern. They have excellent dry dirt traction like an A/T, but are also excellent at self-cleaning in mud. They are quite drivable during the day, with siping for wet weather and comfortable, safe driving on the highway. I imagine they would handle most snow quite well. They work well on rocks, but sidewall strength is the major concern here. I have not experienced any problems personally, but know that I don't have the same level of confidence in these tires as I would in something that had 3-ply sidewalls or even kevlar or some sidewall tread.

Your truck will outlive the tires, for sure!

Aren't the Coopers less cost than the KM2's? KM2's at Costco are still $1000.00 a set with tax. I thought the Cooper tire was cheaper.

No, The truck was at around 66k or so when I swapped tires, so they have around 11k on them, maybe less.

From onlinetires.com:
In size: 265/75/16

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2: not currently listed, previously at ~$160 + tax per tire

Cooper Discoverer S/T: $114.79 + tax per tire

In size: 255/85/16

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2: $153.78 + tax per tire

Cooper Discoverer S/T: $160.83 + tax per tire

It seems that they have recently come down in price a bit, but not enough to put me off buying a full mud-terrain over them, especially the tried and true KM2's with their far superior sidewalls.

Also, I got a good deal on the Coopers because they offered two load ranges in their 265/75/16 ranges. By going with C rather than E, I saved a good chunk of money on the tires, whereas the E range was $160 per tire, just like the KM2's.

Steer clear of our local Costco for tires Randy. America's Tire on Van Mall Dr. has a better selection and better prices.
