NITTO VS BFG KM2

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by irishboy02 » Thu Apr 08, 2010 10:01 pm

Im in a dilemma...

Im torn between the Nitto Extreme Terrain Mud Grapplers and the BFG KM2's

I have the KM2s now and love them, hardly know i even have a mud terrain untill i hit mud.

Costs are comparable.

-I know how the KM2s perform, anyone with ANY info on the mud grapplers performance?

I'd stick with the BFGs if it is a choice between the two. The Nittos are top quality on all types of terrain, but they are shit for highway/city driving. Unless you drive 20% pavement and 80% off road, you will not be happy.

Wait where did you find mud grapplers for a similar price as km2s? And how much? Have no experience with the nittos, just looking at their trail grapplers when they come out later this year in 285 75 16. But damn they're expensive. Hear good things about the km2s and will probably go with them or maxxis bighorns when I go up to 33s.

Now if you want a good recommendation for something other than the BFGs, I have been doing my research on the Federal Couragia MT and they have great ratings. Better ratings the the BFGs all around. And they are only a fraction of the cost. These are the tires I will be getting when it is time for all new tires. Only problem is that they are onyl available for 15" and 16" rims.

I hear a lot of stories of sidewall weakness and tread separation that make me wonder about what seems to be otherwise a great value tire.

Check the new four wheeler or offroad. They just tested the nitto's and did not do so hot. They did a test a few months back and the bfgs were of course rated pretty good.

I would go with the km2 after hearing a jeep guy saying his nittos did not last very long.

I haven't read anything about tread separation, but I have read about the sidewall concerns. The claim it to be a built in design for better flex when aired down.

Brendan if it's a choice between the two I would say stay with the BFG KM2's. Are you gonna up the size at all? Like 265/70R17 or 255/70R16? I dont know your rim size. What about the firestone destination mt? Or Kumho Ventures. I hear good things about both and the ratings on both are very good.

The Firestones are great. Those are my optimum choice, but a full set in the size I want are $1000+. If you plan on dropping that kind of cash just on tires, I say do it.

Yeah that's what I did with the pro comps and I'm very happy with my decision. It wouldn"t be that bad if he got a smaller size than what you are getting , from 183 to 193 a tire. Km2's are more expensive aren't they?

Iv found a few sales right now so hopefully i can get it done within the next month. I need to purchase spacers too. I already love the feel/performance of my km2s but it was love at first site to the graps.

Skinny tires like that have no good use for our platform in mud. they may give you clearance for rocks, but over here on the east coast in jersey, we use wide tires like 12.5 for a reason... displacement, and maximum performance in the mud. 255 are fine for trucks that are more of on road vehicles, but the ones over here that are in the mud and sand need wide tires. I have 285 and wouldn't go any skinnier... next set will probably be roughly the same as brendan. KM2's...

I am getting ready to install some Mickey Thompson MTZs on my Jeep (YJ). We have used these before with really good luck. I am looking forward to getting them on as they are replacing a fairly worn set of MT Claws. The Claws worked great for me but I think I will like the more traditional mud terrian.

I will try to give you guys some feedback once I get them on and put a few on/offroad miles on them. Mine are 35s but I did check and there are some more Trailblazer friendly sizes available as well. We actually just put some 285/70R17 MTZs on an FJ Cruiser in the R&D shop today.

Also, I talked to my buddy Dave at Zone Offroad and he is still running a $20 flat rate shipping deal on all sets of (4) tires listed on their website (they sell Mickey Thompson). Just thought you guys might like to know that because tire shipping can get expensive.

Not sure, but I believe AlekG is running Baja MTZs in like 33".
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.
