Help Build the Trailblazer tool kit

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by snowmirage » Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:20 pm

I thought it might be a good idea to see if anyone would like to help organize a detailed list of tools either for the trail or for the garage that we should keep around for our trucks.

I am about to start the process of tool kit to keep with me on the trail just incase.

Specifically to get the ball rolling

10mm, 15mm, 18mm, and 24mm Sockets I know I needed to put in the lift I just put on.

Some of those are kind of odd balls one might not have in their typical socket set

*Note to self* I better remember to carry a deep socket for what ever size the nuts on my wheel spacers are or they're never coming off, not that I should ever need to but... hell I like to be prepared.

That's what I have. The box is junk, though. Make sure you pick up a socket for the hub nut too.

Good point, I would have forgot about that :o)

Just what I thought this might be useful for, those "O ya I should get one of those" moments on the forums instead of on the side of the road or trail when you realize your missing a piece in your tool kit.

A kit like that'll have most of the stuff you'll need in a pinch, and the rest you can just build as you go

Ya most of the kits I come across dont include even 15mm sockets let alone larger. I was thinking I would just piece it all together. Hmm have to give it some thought.

I was just looking at some of their stuff. I am sure the quality isn't as good as craftsman or something but for bang for the buck you cant beat it.

Also came across this on sale

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... ockType=G4

one of the few smallers sets I've found so far that has some of the larger sockets / wrenches (15mm and 18mm)

this is what i keep in my truck at all times...

http://download.sears.com/misc/IL33192.pdf

that is whats included, pretty much any socket you will need cept the hub.

i keep that tool kit, tow straps, jumper cables, tire iron, fire extinguisher(medium size, i take a big one when i go on trips), flash lights (min 3), knives (min 3), clothes, blankets.

i consider everything in that list a tool. you should see what i take with on bigger trips... lol

I've started bringing an inner tie rod tool and a Pittman puller with me on big trips. I may also include spring compressors and a spare strut considering the failures we've seen lately.

I kept my OEM struts together, and got a set of "arms" from Regulator, so I've got a full spare strut, already together, to take on trips... Then again, I don't have a lift block in mine, either... Just stiffer springs...

I have a set of cheap Pittsburgh wrenches from HF that I got cheap years ago. I've beat on them, put pipe on them for extra leverage, never had an issue.

I always seem to break Craftsman tools and it's more expensive to get them replaced under warranty than to buy new tools locally.

More expensive to get them replaced? Any of the craftsman tools I have ever had that broke I just walked into sears and said hey this broke and they went and grabbed another one for me.

Yeah, craftsman has always been easy and free to replace. Kobalt is the same way at LOWE'S. Both my favorite tools for the money since were not all rich and have piles of Snap-On tools laying around.

Pittsburgh now does a warranty exchange. I just don't know how good it is as I haven't broken any. I have quite a bit of Craftsman tools and Kobalt as well. Most of the tools I take out to the field though are from Harbor Freight since it is a bit cheaper to replace if it gets misplaced or don't get it back from someone that borrowed it.

I broke a Kobalt ratchet one time.
I need to take it back.
I had a cheater bar on it :-)
The pressure didn't break it, the bar just hit the selector switch and it popped off.

My only problem is I break it and how long does it to to replace? I've never seen Pittsburgh tools in a store, I live next to Lowes and if your not near home one isn't hard to find. I wouln't want to be working and it break and two weeks later I can finish when the new tool comes in I like to be able to walk in and swap.
