I completed my first true off road adventure this weekend to Rock Castle River KY with a few buddies for a camping and shooting weekend. I had never been to this location before and was nervous about what lay ahead. Some guys that had been before said "ah... no big deal", while others said "you're going to take this thing down there and beat it"? Once off the black top, we were on gravel for a few miles with nothing more exciting than a couple deep pot holes, though having rained steadily for several days prior they were all filled and left depth to the imagination. A couple surprised me but we got to the trail head no problem. That's when my mall crawler stomach turned. The trail off road to the camp site was approximately 1.5 miles with about 200 feet of elevation change down to the camp site. The steady rain left the trail thick with mud including a couple pools as deep as my bumper. As we wound the trail down trying diligently to keep my body panels crease free, I encountered a couple hairy areas that put me on at least a 30 degree angle. As we finally neared the camp site, in our final descent, there they were. 3 shelves in a row anywhere from 18-24 inches. I bottomed out hard trying to ease down and even harder climbing out 2 days later but the mall crawler did it! It got me all the way home driving straight and noise/leak free. I regret not having gotten more pictures but at the time it was the last thing I was thinking about. Plans to return in October but I should be lifted by then and more comfortable stopping on the trail for a few good photos.
