I'm wanting to plan a long term offroad goal for myself (before I turn 30). I want to get some opinions as to where they think the ultimate offroad experience is in the world. Seeing as how we have some overseas members, this should be an informative thread. I was thinking South Africa. Of course Australia would be a competetor aswell.
But this is going to be an all out expedition style trip. I'm talking about shipping my TB overseas (which isn't as expensive as I expected) and spending 2 weeks or so.
Not expecting many (if any) willing to make this journey with me, but I at least want to get opinions as to where to go and how to prepare my rig.

I think you named 2 very good ones. North Africa would be good too, think of the history up in those deserts.

One big consideration is parts availability and uniqueness of a vehicle.

A TB would be an extreme rarity in Africa.

I think a TB would be better suited to stay in the Americas for that reason. Or at least not Africa. I don't think TBs were ever produced in Australia either.

One more reason to prepare as best I can here. Thinking of what could POSSIBLY go wrong.
Also, one reason i want to ship the TB is for the novelty of it. Draw plenty of attention. I'm sure I can find a group out there to go out with. Mix it up as a offroad trip/safari. I would love to see a lion! Or an elephant!

What are the legalities of operating a transported vehicle elsewhere? My parents shipped a car to Portugal to keep it there, not every expensive, no... but they did have to go through lots of paperwork to get it registered to operate it there. Not sure how it is with a temporary deal.

You're going to need a RTT, to stay away from the lions.

Might want to get a nice RT storage set up and sleep in the back, I saw a 4Runner that had a pull out drawers and a slim mattress on top. A RTT won't stop a lion.

yeah, I wouldn't want to take my chances in a RTT with a lion either.
This seems like an awesome idea.
I was thinking it would be awesome just to do a trip like James did recently.

Lions are curious, but naturally non agressive towards humans. I think the large presence of the vehicle w/ a RTT would be enough to keep lions at a distance. I know of people who tent camp out there and lions tend to sniff around at night but run away as soon as it's spotted.
I plan on aquiring a large caliber firearm while I'm out there... JIC

There's a lot of conversation regarding the firearm aspect when on a 3rd world overland trip. It depends highly on where you are, but if you're in many of the unstable nations there, I've read that no firearm is actually a safer way to go when dealing with other humans. There are lots of other factors to consider when over there.

Here's a really good read to get you in the right mindset for this type of trip: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/t ... o-Kinshasa

Dude, awesome trip. I have only read to the 3rd-4th day and am captivated. This is a good example what can happen and they are well prepared, may want to think about Australia.

It's a fun read... especially live - when you had to wait between baobob's posts!

It gets better.

I've never read any trips over there. I spend most of my time either on their domestic or trailer build threads.

Read them, I just finished it and it was worth every hour it took!

I may be wrong but Dirty-Bacon-Down-Under sounds like something from the International Bacon Of The Month Club catalog.......
