Michelin LTX A/T 2

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

Hello,

I searched for Michelin's and didn't come up with much. I have been thinking about new tires for the TB. A buddy of mine works at the Ford dealer I always buy tires from and we came across the Michelin LTX A/T 2. From pictures they didn't look super aggressive but seemed like a nice mix between a street and AT tire. My question is has anyone tried these offroad?
My TB is my daily driver for a 30 mile commute so I don't want to kill mileage totally for occasional mild offroading. However I still want to be able to get back to those hidden huntin spots. My other options I liked were the General Grabbers AT and BFG A/T KO. I just wondered if the Michelins were worth a darn.

Here is a link to the Michelins http://www.michelinman.com/tire-selecto ... 7AodegwAWQ
Thanks

I've had a good experience with my Grabbers so far. The only times I've been hung wasn't due to tire, they've performed far better than I ever expected.

Sounds like the Grabbers are pretty good. How well do they do in the mud? Thats what I will see the most around here when I am offroad.

Mud is a unique beast. If you're in heavy thick mud often, you need tread voids (a Mud Terrain tire).

Agreed. The mud I'm usually in is not super soupy and has some clay in it. Thick clay won't clean well, but they still did well in the areas that were very slick and technical in my area. In very dense mud, MT will 'generally' be better, but 'tend' to wear faster and are sometimes heavier.

I would love to to go with mt's I loved the hankooks I had on my old pick up. But I'm not in mud enough to justify the mpg loss they create.

Did you end up buying the LTX AT2s? I had the LTX ATs on a Jeep 20 years ago. They were worth more than the 79 CJ5 they were installed on, but I worked in a tire shop, and I'd pretty much swallowed my own line that no matter how crappy your vehicle is, you will realize the benefit of premium tires. Reality is if your vehicle is a POS, it will still be a POS, but with Michelins. No question they were an outstanding road tire with exceptional quality, that could go off-road if you needed them to, but not a real off-road tire. They were great on the highway, but pretty lousy in the slop. General Grabbers are great for the money (that's what I SHOULD have put on that pig). If you're looking for a premium tire, it sounds like the new BFG T/A KO2 would be perfect for you, if they ever get released. I've been holding off for a set on my Yukon, whose old KOs are getting paper thin. The 265/70R17 is supposed to be out in March. They're pretty similar to the old KOs, but with a little more bite in the sidewall tread which is supposed to pay dividends in mud and snow. We'll see.

I used the original LTX AT's on my 96 C1500, was the best tire I think I could have used on that truck. I do not think that I would use them on an overly modified 360, but a stock or near stock, I think they would work well.

I put scores of those tires on stock 1990-98 K1500s, usually 265/75r16s replacing the factory original 245 tires. Every time I handed the keys back to the owner I knew they were going to be really pleased. But they weren't taking these trucks off-road.
