I tried, lol. Just make you get a 8.6" from a TB EXT, envoy XL or a TB with 5.3 or just get a SS axle

So the EXT or XL axles will fit a normal wheel base?

Yes bolt in, if your going upgrade you want the bigger ring gear 8.6". The axle is stronger and has more aftermarket lockers.. The SWB with 4.2L has a 8.0" ring gear is weaker and only two locker/LSD options.

Thank you, I thought I was limited to only the standard wheel base!

I am wanting to Re-Gear from 3.42 to 4.10, is it easier or better to just do whole new front and rear axles or will it be fine to just buy the ring and pinon and rebuild it in the stock 3.42 axle?

I wasn't sure how strong it would be if the axle could support a 4.10

Cheaper to buy axles than build since you can't DIY

One of my friends can rebuild the gears. And Kyle, I got some good news today, I may be getting a new job so I should have the funds soon for the build if I get it, then you Regulator and I and whoever else wants to come can make a day of working on rigs!

When I swapped mine last year, I got a complete 8.6 rear axle with <100k miles for around $350 + shipping. If you can avoid shipping, you'll save a lot of money. If you are doing the swap anyway, save yourself headaches down the road and get an 8.6 axle. As stated earlier, it is a direct fit to a SWB. Also I was concerned that a larger gear would impact my clearance, but all of the additional height is at the top -- the ground clearance stays the same between the 8.0 and 8.6 axles. Your existing calipers, rotors, etc will all fit the larger axle.

As for the front... you would specifically swap the differential. It is self-contained and separate from the axles. Since you have a gear man, you could just change out the gears in the same housing. I didn't have that option, and paid a small fortune to have a complete differential shipped to me.

so what your saying is for the rear just go ahead and find a 4.10 8.6" axle and then just rebuild the front gear?

No reason other than cost. If you can get a good price on an assembly or the parts and labor, go that way.

The reason for getting the whole rear axle is that you have an 8.0 now and you want an 8.6.

Remember what I said before... rear axle you can use anything from 2002-2005 (Trailblazer EXT, Envoy XLT). Those shouldn't be too hard to find, and you can try to get something low-mileage.

The front differential can come from any year, although the SS models seem to be the easiest to locate (but it still took me three months to find one) -- however since you have a gear guy, just use your existing diff and install new 4.10 gears in it.

Note that after you make this swap, there is a good chance you get frequent ABS warnings. Updating the PCM for 4.10 gears will correct that.

I too am having troubles deciding what I should regear to. As of right now I am running 265-50 on 20s but I plan on going with a smaller rim and bigger tires like everyone else. My driving as of right now pretty much consists of city driving and hwy as I go home on the weekends sometimes (65-85mph). So my question is, is that should I go with the 4.10 gears or the 4.56? Putting them in is no problem after all I'm going to school for automotive purposes.

What size are you going with? 33's or 35's? Most guys with 35's on here have 4.10s and are alright. I have 33's and 4.56s and it could be a little overkill.
