I've been working on these off and on for awhile. They're nearing completion so I figured I'd post em up. I wanted to protect the rocker and the body and provide something "step like". I used this for the fishmouths, worked pretty alright. Welding pipe was a unique experience, I got better at it the more I did it. I try not to drop it cause this shit is probably going to fall apart.

I plan on running 3/16" plates on the frame in a 4" square, but on a diagonal. I was originally planning on using taco gussets in 3/16" plate too... but I'm starting to consider some 1/8" instead. I believe a generous 1/8" taco style gusset will be sufficent and require a lot less pounding on metal to form em.
Gonna pick up some rod tomorrow to fill in the gaps so a foot cant slip through those open areas on sliders.




Donny, thanks for the compliment The design evolved a bit while I was making em. It tends to make my projects take longer, but I like working with a fluid plan. I was staring at them more tonight and they're still going to evolve a bit more to tie in elements from the front bumper and taillight gaurds.

Nice! I didn't plate my frame and have had no issues so far and I have dropped on my sliders pretty hard a few times. To do it again I would plate just for the price of mind.

Looks like the taco gussets are getting made outta 3/16" cause I can't find 1/8" without going to the steel place and buying a sheet, I can't be bothered. I'm a pussy and don't really care for working in the cold so I've been dragging ass on these
Finished up bending all the 5/16" rod to fill in the gaps and welded up one side. it still needs some finish work, but I like the design and it works from a practical perspective, nobody should have trouble with a foot slipping in. At worse the rod will get bent if a foot hits it just right.

all the frame to tube pieces are fishmouthed and the frame plates are cut.

I think these are close to being finished as far as fab goes. I bent all the rod cold, by hand. The gentle bends were done on my leg, the tighter bends were done using my bench vise.

When you said you were going to reduce the size of the holes with rod, I thought oh no, you're going to make them look so ugly. Well you proved me wrong. Awesome use of rod. Looks friggin sweet.

That's just the texture of the bedliner, it looks all shitty like that after the first coat, after I get 3 or 4 coats on it's more uniform and doesn't look like shit

Yeah, I use a MIG, there's very little spatter... Unless I forget to turn on the gas lol
The texture is starting to build up, might look good this morning as I continue the coats. I'll probably have more pics in a couple hours

Still not entirely happy with the texture, but I think it's almost there. More coats of bedliner are drying as I type.

finally got enough coats for it to look good. Just finishing up on the coats on the other one, hoping to weld em on today.

Finally got around to welding on my sliders. Did some shitty welding to the frame and some fantastic welding too. I positioned them a bit to the rear to allow for cutting the fenders for bigger tires. Jacked up the truck with them and they didn't fall off. That was cool. Woulda welded them on a week ago but I spent a week in Dallas.

So these things have held up well. It's taken a bit of getting used to stepping over/around or on/off them but for the most part they are a non issue. The mother in law actually finds it easier to get into the truck, the misses is a little slower to figure it out. lol
I generally jack the truck up by the sliders because they are more convenient and they deflect an 1/8"-1/4" at most. If I was to do it again I would plate the frame and weld the tube to the plate... fitting the tube to the plate on the frame would probably work better. But that's about it.

With the first few pics, I was like... I don't know if I'm gonna like this! But man, the finished product looks awesome! Right fromt he first shot of them on stands against the truck I saw where you were going. Good design. As in anything, I would do a couple things different. That being said, yours have caused me to at least consider building my own! The biggest hold back is that I hate notching for round tubes. lol I'm too lazy???
