[COMPLETED] PNW4x4s 5th Annual Labor Day Camping/Wheeling

Getting close to that time again.

Who: Pacific Northwest 4x4s - a large (and still growing) group of 4x4 enthusiasts. Full Size, Mid-Size, Jeep, Toyota... all are welcome.
When: Labor Day Weekend 2012 Aug 28th - Sept 3rd
Where: Brown's Camp, Tillamook State Forest One hour west of Portland, OR. Camp site TBD, probably at the base of Can Opener.
What: Camping and wheeling! TSF has trails for all skill levels and most trucks. Bypasses for the hard stuff so you can still do the stuff your truck is capable of. Don't want to run your rig? We can find you a passenger seat. Or just come and watch and get some camping in. Our campsites are never empty.

This year we will be raffling off a Smittybilt XR8000 winch donated by the local 4WheelParts! That's in addition to the tons of other swag given away every year!

What should I bring? Camping supplies and food if you're going to camp. We almost always do one or more coordinated breakfasts and dinners in potluck fashion. Keep an eye on the linked thread for more details.

How about my truck? Have at least All-Terrain tires and a rear recovery point (your receiver works). A CB is nice but not required. If you are new and don't have a lot of kit built up don't worry. We'll help you out. Pull your running boards off if you have them. We can unhook your front bumper at camp if need be.

How about me? Come with a good attitude and be ready to learn if you're new. Everyone in PNW is like family. There's some trash talk, but it's all in fun. This event is family/kid/pet friendly. Our campsites are big enough that the party by the fire can go on until late but the tents/trailers can be far enough away that it's quiet.

I'm not from the Portland Area. We have folks who come down from the Seattle,WA area and up from South of Salem, OR. We can hook you up with these folks so you can caravan down.


I expect to see some GMT360s at this event, or I'm gonna have to start banning some fools.

Great pics, man. I used to think the Roadiemobile would someday do stuff like that on the harder 2/3 of the Rubicon. But with ten bridging ladders, four spotters, and two hours invested, I might make 100 yards on terrain like yours.

I'm so glad we have an alternate goal of Expeditioning within our reach. What you're doing surely isn't safe to do solo - or as much fun!

Correct on all accounts. TSF is really set up more like an offroad park. This weekend for me was a "OK, how many of the hardest trails can I do?" Would I follow Teebes to Alaska in this truck? No way.

The flop gave me some interesting perspective on what a truck will put up with. I now honestly recommend everyone be in a rig that goes over so they know what it feels like.

At any rate, I now have a crawler that I'm very happy with. That means I can stop trying to turn the TB into that crawler. What do I want next? An expo rig.

I hit the brakes and killed the motor as the truck flopped. We checked the oil level afterwards and added a little. I lost more from the transfer cases than anything. Yes we cleaned it up.

The motor was making noise when I drove it out there on Friday. I thought it was the timing chain guide. If you listen closely in the videos you can hear it ticking.

I'm picking up a fresh motor (still in assembly lube) on Sunday from a guy on CL. Toyotas are cheap to fix.

I almost bought a shitty caged xj just to flop it. Thought it would be good experience. Only roll i had was on pavement and it was not fun.

I wasn't there but I expect in Donny's case it was one of those easy....easy..... oh $#%#$% crash! kind of moments where it kind of felt like slow motion.

Accidents are weird. I grew up on a farm in a rural town so it was nothing for 13-14 year old farmer kids to be driving trucks on the highway around the neighborhood. I think I was about 15 at the time and had to drive the old farm truck to the barn to get something(about 2miles away) and when I pulled back up in the yard near the house the brakes went out and I hit the column between the two garage doors. What I remember most was it almost seemed like everything happened in fast fwd or something. I guess that is why things like military training is so intense because you can't really process it unless you have been in those situations before.

The first video in this thread shows it. It was a gentle flop, but happened because I assumed my left rear tire would bounce off a ledge instead of climbing it.
