CV Shaft popped out

Something not working right?

by larryk » Fri Nov 11, 2016 1:04 pm

Didn't someone on the list offer you one free for shipping cost?

I guess if you reuse the old one is your call. I'm pretty anal about these kinds of things, so I'd replace it right away. Then again, if you are going to pull the diff soon anyhow, and aren't worried about possibly snapping a weakened shaft in the interim, reuse it :) Since you have a parts vehicle already, and it takes what...maybe a half hour to pull that side apart.... I would

He offered a "shaft" but not sure whether that was CV or intermediate or what. Asked but no reply yet. I also got into the parts truck last night but I can't for the life of me get that disco to come off of the oilpan. I'm going to try again tonight, but if I can't get to the shaft I'll just reuse the old one.

You can just take off the outer half of the disco housing. It makes it harder to get to the intermediate shaft, but it can be pulled out with a bolt in the threaded end.

What!!! I'm an idiot... Didn't even think of that. I took the outer half off of the disco to try and find a way to get the thing off and then just ended up putting the other half back on and trying more.... LOL

My freaking disconnect housing busted and it stuck to the oil pan. This has me stumped for a while now. I am scared to damage oil pan.

Others have drilled theirs out. You'll have to do the same. Pull the gear out, and pull the intermediate shaft out, then you'll have to make small drill marks around the perimeter of the needle bearing to relieve the pressure.

Mason, don't worry about a little wear on the intermediate shaft. It doesn't ride on any bearings, just seals. Should be fine.

Alright, gotcha. Thanks! I've got the entire front suspension apart (went ehaead and put in my new struts and '87s) so I'm also replacing all of my UCA/LCA and strut bushings with "prothane" ones. They feel pretty dang solid, and hold tight without making a peep. Found out all ball joints have busted boots, so popping those out and replacing them as well since they have lifetime warrantee.

Bzzzttt... Both ends of the intermediate shaft are supported by bearings, identical to the ones supporting the CVs. Granted, there should be no lateral loading as in the CV joints, but it still does ride in bearings

I feel you....did the complete front rebuild, including all your talking about, plus diff, plus sway bar bushings. Rides like a new truck...as it better, since all the parts are new....lol. Did you get sucked into the sand blast and paint thing like I did? Its a sickness :)

I reallllllly wanted to... But I talked myself out of it because I just couldn't justify it with my lack of time and funds. Plus, my truck is honestly in GREAT condition since it's been down south it's entire life. There's hardly a speck of rust (except the I shaft LOL) or any chipped coating anywhere.

I rebuilt the whole front-end from struts to bushings to tie rods, also installed my '87 springs and brand new struts, new CVs, got it aligned and took it out camping this weekend. Went through a fairly rough 4wheeler trail and started hearing a gnarly rattling sound Everytime I hit the slightest bump. Got out and looked to find this. Driver side strut/lift tearing itself apart. Passenger side is okay but washer looks bent. I guess I have too much lift now with the 3" block and '87 springs and I need to put a 2" lift in instead. But I'm not the only one running a 3" and 87s right??ImageImageImage

What kind of lift do you got mason? The bushing plate is hella small. The one I put on the lift he's selling is the upgraded bds washer. I got it from James, it's supposed to be better.

I REALLY don't want to say I could have put it together without the washer plate..... But I don't know how the heck it would have got out of there if I did put it in.

Just for closure... Everything is fixed now. Apparently, I was in such a hurry when putting the front end back together that I completely neglected to put the washer between the strut bushing and holding nut... Complete idiot right? I know. I pulled it apart and the bushing wasn't too bad, so I just flipped the top/bottom bushings and put it back together WITH the washer. All good now!
