Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

My knockoff of JD's amazing tire carrier.

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

Yep it seems it will need to be higher or it may not lay down enough to open the rear door.

You talkin the pass thru reciever (extension), that sticks out like a foot?? Or the end that goes into our stock reciever? Either way I'm looking for him to basically shorten the pass thru reciever (extention) which I'll only really be using for a shackle for the most part.

And I'd like for the end that bolts to the stock reciever of the truck to be drilled a lil closer so the carrier butts up against the rear a little tighter.

Trying not to make it confusing to read my decription..

JD as for laying down flat.. I'm not concerned wiht that. As long as I can get to the cargo area it'l be perfect. And less of an effort to push the tire back up. But also if he does shorten the extension it might clear it.

I guess we shall all see if I ever get this thing. Otherwise I'll just cut holes in my bumper and make a swinging carrier like I ssuggested to Hardtrailz.

The pass through is gonna leave a very weak point to have a shackle mounted. Any side load and it will bend.

The big question is if you have any money tied up in it. If so, you need to get what you want.

No money in it so far... but thats why I've been tryin to contact him so I can get the changes made.

But I also don't want to screw him on this either.. just wish he was in my area then I'd be able to go there and easily have him make me stuff and actually use my rig for mock up. Right now he has to use one that goes to his school, so its not as easy as it could be.

I do like the idea of making the end a shackle mount only. Like HardTrailz said, if your hauling a trailer you can mount the spare to it. Making it a shackle only, would shorten it up allot, and get rid of all the problems.

Exactly... thats what I've been waiting on Neil to get back to me on. Other than that I like it so far and should be a nice piece...

The hitch extension length was a big issue for me as well. One way I took some length off of mine was to redrill the pin hole on the male part of the extension. This got me a good 1.5-2" shorter overall. I may cut the female part down as well since my plan is to stick a shackle mount in mine too. On the other side of the coin, I'd like to keep the length along with a shackle mount as it would allow me to use the shackle as a HiLift jack point without removing my spare.

Since Neil has already made your tire carrier jog inwards a bit, you may not have the redrill option. Also, is being able to open your glass with the carrier up a concern for you? It looks like you may have issues depending on the angle he mounts the lug plate at.

On the plus side, I've used my carrier for recovery purposes already (with a 2" strap and a 5/8" pin through the hole in the extension) and it's worked well, even with a bit of sideloading. No deformation.

The folding mechanism added maybe an hour to the design/fab process. Just look at how JD's/my/janesy86's hinges work. It's well worth it. My first try at this was a fixed carrier that slid in and out of the receiver to allow access to the liftgate. I HATED it.

For me I'm not concerned with the window... Only open the hatch for work to put in 5 gal buckets full of stone/sand so the window wouldn't cut it. So as long as it doesn't getin my way too bad to the rear I'll be fine.

:Iagree: I have a fixed one and it is not worth using. I figured....no big deal, but even though the window would open, not having gate access sucked.
