AA1PR’s Tire Carrier

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by AA1PR » Mon Jun 08, 2015 11:38 am

Been wanting one for a while now, last year I had an eye opener where I learned with my injury (disability) I couldn’t get the spare tire down from the factory installed location

I originally thought about something like this on my rear door
Image

so in the mean time I have been tossing around this idea

for my receiver adapter I'm using a rage power sports 8" hitch extension its class IV rated
Image

here is my plan
Image

I got all the parts together to get this completed yesterday, so I stopped by the local welder & again he wont weld my stuff..Oh well I’ll do it myself

so I got my own flux core welder & goodies to finish it off once warmer weather gets here. I haven’t welded in years but its like riding a bike, hopefully

Trying to enlarge holes by going up one size bit is a PITA
Image

Got some step bits for my holes, so I get nice straight clean holes & makes life so much easier
Image

Got it welded up & painted
Image

Didn’t care for my original mounting idea so I changed it out, welded on another piece of 4""X8"X3/16" plate over the old piece & then re-drilled using the step bits
Image

Added several layers of duct tape so I didn’t get any corrosion between the steel plate & the aluminum rim as oxidation usually occurs

Letting the sun bake on the paint for a while
Image

Got it mounted & now to get the tire on
Image

All on
Image

I can even open the rear window
Image

Left it on for a week like this while we were on vacation with friends

Then decided I wanted to notch the upright in order to get it to lean backwards ever so slightly

So I took about 5/16" of a notch out
Image

Image

Basically how it’ll look in the upright position
Image

So after carefully grinding all the joints & welding I decided to add some plate across the welded joint just in case, better safe than sorry

& here is my finished product
Image

About 200 miles later & it’s still doing well

That looks good! My original plan was to go that route but I was afraid that when wheeling, it would rock back and forth with the little amount of play in the factory receiver, making it rattle all the time.

Awesome job. not only does it look great and work, but you got to do it yourself instead of paying someone to do it. I think it makes it that much better.

Looks good!

Looks like you could make it a little lower, if you wanted to? See better out the rear window, etc.

thanks guys

yes I should have test fit it before I made the cut

my back was killing me & I was just happy to finish her off

can still see out the back some, not great, thats what mirrors are for right :)

I might after I get some light body work done on the rig (monstaliner), cut the top angles section down some & re-weld that since I cant shorten the vertical upright since its bolted on the base & has my 3/8" bolt that goes through it so it folds down near the upright supports

I guess I ought to get a pic of it folded down, when it folds down I can open the rear door, that was another main objective with it

maybe I'll sell this one & build another over the winter now I have a better idea of what I really need
