Custom front winch bumper and skid plates

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by maricard » Wed May 13, 2015 7:58 pm

I tried to get Mike's bumper but when you live in Canada you have to pay too much for post services and custom fees.

So I draw my own winch bumper.

I did some jig to figure how it'll work.

I finally got my pieces.

Let get work

I got some problems with some folding so I had to trim to be able to bent it. It's stiffer than I thought!!!

This is where I am now.

What do you think about it?

I thought it was Mike's until I read otherwise. Looks great! Did you weld the skid back up where you had to cut and bend it? Give you the strength back.

Very pro looking work, did you use sketchup for the whole thing? If so, that's impressive.

Yes I had to weld where I cut. It's not my better welding but the strength back enough.

Yes I used only sketchup for the design of the bumper. But I had a lot of difficulties with the metal shop to convert the file in something good for them. When I transfer it in CAD file the drawing was a mesh.

Thank everyone for your comments.

Holy cow, you spent a TON of time copying my stuff! Just from pictures, too, which is really good! I'm not mad about it, at all! That is a shitload of time! Even with the ability to look at lots of finished examples and pictures of the pieces to copy, you still had to come up with the dimensions and matching angles! Interestingly, with the exception of the ovals at the bottom, that's exactly how I have the front section designed, as well!

Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost you to get that stuff cut out and bent? I know when we talked about it, exactly what you have there was going to be a little over $1k USD, even with the really expensive shipping. However, because the Canadian dollar has gone down so much compared to the US dollar (it was 1:1 like a year and a half ago, but is ~80% now, plus conversion fees), by the time you changed to US dollars and paid the import tariff, it was going to be like $1500 Canadian.

you speak french as a first language?

the part you put on the front of the bumper to direct the winch cable , might need a little more metal to strengthen it . It has been commented in my build with a similar design.

la partie que vous mettez sur le devant du pare-chocs pour diriger le câble du treuil , pourrait avoir besoin d' un peu plus de métal à RENFORCER il . Il a été commenté dans ma construction avec un design similaire .

Most people in rural Quebec speak french as a first language, and some barely speak any english at all. The only places that almost everybody is truly bilingual in QB are the larger cities.

Also, I think we commented on yours being like that, due to it only being a single flat piece. This is a copy of the one that I made last year, and with the triangles pointing back at an angle, it's actually pretty strong.

The oval hole are for the winch mounting and access to the hardwares.

It wasn't too long. I spent about a week to design it on sketchup and made jig template with foam core.
I sent it to http://promett.com/ for the laser cut and the bending.
Actually it was the longer step, about 2 months.
It cost me 850 can$ to get it. Barely half of the price. and the second could cost 20%-30% less expensive. And if I had to do 2 kits at the same time It could be 40% less expensive. But don't worry Mike. I don't want to stealth your business!!!!
This spring I was studen for my master degree so I had a lot of time to put on it. Now I'm really busy and it's hard to find the time to peint my bumper (the final step before using it)
Thank Mike to sharing your work. It was really useful.

It's no problem, man! I post how I make things, and I posted the how-to on the website, with the detail pictures, so that people can make stuff for themselves, if they want, and do it well (strong, good design). I do what I do as a service for the community, more than anything, at this point. I make very little money at it (in fact, if I go back to the beginning, all told, I'll maybe break even this year), and it takes a BUNCH of my spare time.

That is really inexpensive, by the way, with all the prices being so high in Canada! That's right at what I could do it for (in USD), before the exchange rate, shipping cross-border, and import taxes.
