Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Yep another spare tire carrier

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by Blazintrails03 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 11:26 pm

So I'm waiting for the weekend to install my lift and while I am I'm throwing around ideas for my hitch mounted spare carrier.

The hitch mount will accommodate a curt spare tire carrier
http://www.amazon.com/Curt-Manufacturing-31006-Spare-Mount/dp/B0009YIE1O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=CSWFY029PVHG&coliid=I3OX4YNTA6O13

I've seen the hitch haul but don't really like how far it sticks out and how far it hangs down. I'm looking at a Curt dual 2" receiver that is stacked on top of each other. I like this cause I can still swap out a shackle mount or ball mount in the bottom receiver.
http://www.amazon.com/CURT-Manufacturing-45792-Receiver-Extender/dp/B00371VLAC/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=CSWFY029PVHG&coliid=IZ9RTK91UFCY0

I don't have any previous experience or knowledge of a dual receiver stacked like that so any input or warnings are welcome please.

I plan on cutting down the receiver extension to bring it into the receiver as close to the bumper as possible and will also drill holes and pin it to make it swing down

Also I know many of you are gonna say just get a receiver extension and weld the tire mount to the top of it but 1: I don't have a welder 2: I don't wanna pay the money to have someone else weld it and 3: I would actually rather not have it welded that way if I want to change something I can just unbolt it or pull a pin and play with the design

The only input from me about the top receiver is, built like that, you can't tow or extract with the top receiver. The top one would only be for a bike carrier or tire carrier.

Really, though, by the time you pay $70 for that, and $100 for the tire carrier, you could just buy a tire carrier that has a receiver on it, and swings down. The Curt one you show doesn't swing down. It's stationary.

I bought one of those double receiver units back when I was experimenting insanely. Need it right away or do you want me to dig around in the garage and see if I can find it? Cheaper than buying a new one.

Bill can build an expo vehicle with the spare parts he has in his garage and still have enough parts left over to carry spares!

The top receiver would be all time tire carrier mount with the option of swapping whatever recovery or tow equipment in the lower receiver. My plan was to also cut down the curt carrier to bring the spare down to increase visibility out of the back window and while I was at drill a hole in the lower section and the upper and bolt and pin two pieces of plate on either side to make it swing down

Oh totally if you can find it let me know. Fresh coat of paint and its brand new to me. That's one of the things I love about our group on here when you look at build threads and read how stuff changes hands

So... you're literally buying 2 pieces and modifying one of them for the same price as buying an already-working one that will do the same thing?

I know CBI makes one that folds but it doesn't have the extra receiver. Is there someone out there that makes a folding hitch carrier with the extra receiver so you can still tow?
I'm thinking about building one when I get my larger tires.
I might just buy one of these

I was making them for $175, with a receiver in them, and I remember I was priced like that because a real company was like $220 or something, but can't find it, now...

I remembered you making a few (MikePeters?) but wasn't sure if there were on your official item list or not. I didn't see any threads in the vendor section earlier.
If you buy the parts and piece them together it will cost as much as yours and won't be nearly as nice.

CBIOffroadfab.com

Keep in mind, the one that I showed is their "premium" model with a "premium" price tag. $350 + shipping. But it does come with a license plate mount/light and a high lift mount.

Not the one I was thinking of, because they're $350. I had thought there was somebody else doing them...

Basically it would close to the same thing as the CBI but nowhere near the price tag. Possibly cheaper if Roadie can find the one he has. I'm sure the 2 pieces and some nuts and bolts would be way cheaper than CBI's price

Here's a question. Does anyone know if the tounge that holds the ball on the hitch-haul could be removed to leave an empty 2 receiver extension with the folding mechanism already there. That would be perfect right there

Nevermind I just realized that's a dumb question. Can't really put a 2 inch receiver inside of a 2 inch receiver :slap:
