Hidden pivot tire carrier

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by yalchga » Sun Mar 04, 2012 12:00 pm

So we welded this up this weekend in about 4 hours from scratch. We were talking about making a couple for sale probably looking $200 plus shipping and a couple weeks build time cause my brother does the welding and hes a railroader so only in town about a week each month. The pivot pin ir hidden. This thing is heavy duty.

You might want to cut down the receiver a bit

Can you get a pic with the tire on it? Also whats max size tire and still be able to open rear window without folding the carrier down?

What finish do you ship them with?

Also whats the cross bar purpose? hi-lift?

The pivot was welded in place the grinded smoothon the outsides. The length of reciever would not be a prob at all this one still needs cleaning up cause we ran out of time while making it i will also post pics of finished product. Im posting some pics of the raw welds too so you can see the quality and some comparison so you get an idea of thickness and strength of metal used. I wasnt concerned about the length cause i wanted to have plenty of room for ball to take my 4x8 trailer on and off with tire mounted. I will let you know max size tire for glass to open in about a week the ones i have now are 32s and i have about 2 inches but i ordered 33' guard dogs and i wanna make sure hatch still opens with a ball mounted when its down.

Finish will be bare metal or rattle can black lol i dont wanna paint or powdercoat because of cost keep it as low as possible. Crossbar is for hi-lift or shovel or whatever im 280 lb and can bounce on either side with no give.

IMO, $200 plus shipping is a bit steep... I can buy one brandnew powder coated black for $189 off a site. Can't remember what site it was. I found the thread somewhere on here. Someone else might know it. It was shown on a 4runner. It also had the pivot point on it. I'd buy one from you for $200 shipped to my door. Looks really good though!

CBI is the other company, Christian. But it's their basic tire carrier.

Their premium model goes for $350.

Gabe, looking forward to seeing this progress!

Depending on cost of shipping Id definitely be interested in 1 of these also due to the fact the hitch is still usable as a contact point and to tow with. That was my hang up with CBI's. I have been debating on building 1 of these myself but unsure my welding skills are to par enough to feel comfortable enough to have a big 33" tire mounted on it.

Another question....What spacing are the studs to mount the wheel on set at? Half of us are stock 6x5 and half of us are 6x5.5

I look forward to seeing it with a 33" mounted on it and some more pics of different angles both upright and in the down position.

I would just make sure you use a 6" receiver, like I did on mine/Kyle's, instead of a 12". Matt's has a 12" on it, because it's made by a conversion van company, and he drags it ALL OVER THE PLACE... Not to mention that the 12" one doubles the moment that the tongue weight of the trailer has on the hitch, vs. the 6" one...

Also, I assume it folds just far enough that the door can open? I had done a previous one like that, but mine/Kyle's actually folds down flat when you take the top pin out, but folds down only far enough to get the lift gate open if you take the bottom pin out... Makes it so you can both load big things in the back, and so if you just need to get in there for something, you can push it back up, instead of lifting it back up, if it was down flat all the time.

Also, so the tire doesn't flop side to side, you'll likely want to do a mounting plate with 3 bolts, instead of just a mount on a piece of tube.

That may be an option. Let me test this one out with tire mounted for a couple weeks make sure theres no design flaws lol and we could probably do that.

Will definately take all these suggestions into consideration before actually selling one price may be able to be adjusted down a bit but we shall see. The whole point of selling em is that for about 4 months now i have been shopping for one and they are all way out of my price range for half the product so hopefully i can help a few of you get one at a descent price

Definitely nice to be able to drop it part or all the way depending on which pin I pull.

Keep em coming guys you have already mentioned a ton of stuff i didnt even think about as this is my first 4wd vehicle and i have nowhere near the offroad real world trail experience that you all have. And i know a tire carrier is a conveniance not a necessity so it better be a damn good product if im gonna sell it.

A spare tire is a necessity. So a good mounting option is as well.

The tire is a necessity but it would be free to just throw it in roof rack haha but I see what your saying .

Bigger the tire, the harder to "throw" it in the roof rack. Not to mention "throwing" a muddy flat back up there after getting spare down
