Another take on a roof top light bar

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by Jimbo121 » Wed Dec 21, 2011 5:04 pm

Ok I know its been done a hundred times but here is my current mod and how I went about mounting the light bar.
First I have to not that if you have an older TB or Envoy be careful when removing these bolts. My front passenger side was rusted to the nut that is pressed into the sheet metal which made this mod a pain in the a@*.

using square stock I just lopped off the ends leaving a tab for the mount to the roof bar. Welded tabs for the lights and drilled the entry holes to run the wire inside the bar

Still waiting on the other two 550s, the bar is attached to the roof with the front mounting bolt of the rack slide. it is sandwiched between two grommets to cut and vibration. Even at highway speeds it doesn't cause any noise at all.
Even my squad car roof lights caused noise at 70mph!!!!

Something like this is what I have been considering. I am just not that far into it yet for the lights...

Looks pretty alright. I like it.

Do you plan on drilling a hole or routing the wires through the door?

Drilling a hole. Under the same area where the bar is mounted.

Wow! Seems easy enough to where I could do it without the supervision of Roadie... But I dont want to offend him :poke:

^^ DON'T DO IT!!! :finger:

@OP- Looking really good. I wish I would have thought of it before I changed roof rails. That's a much simpler way to not lose a bunch of light on the roof.

I used that same method for part of my half-roof rack. Seems to hold well, but I was a bit worried about pulling out one of those rivet nuts. I guess I could always pop a new one in.

We do have a mobile app, it's called tapatalk. :work:

We intentionally limit it to 3 pictures per post just to try to nudge people to just other photo-hosting options, like photobucket.

About the wind noise, the TB really does do a decent job at hiding the wind noise. I barely notice any noise from my rack and tent... mainly just the occasional creaking noises.

Welding the ends shut and running the wiring inside the tube, using gromits on the wires as they exit the tube are all things that I did to limit that. I have to say I haven't had any noticeable noise.

The only hiccup so far was that I used the left over flap after cutting the tubing that was too flexible. I welded another piece of 18 gauge steel in place and that is holding very well.
