Gordinho's Rear Bumper Project

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

Nice work!

Try Graingers for the latch. They may be a tad pricey, but you will get industrial quality stuff. Or, conversely, what we do on some of the swing-outs that we build is to use a screw-in fastener with a nylon washer behind the head of the screw (we use rather large size like 5/8" or 3/4" w/large fender washer as a bearing surface) instead of some other form of latch. Provides the ability to lock (stop from turning) and will never rattle. Becomes the third leg of the stool, so to speak.

I've thought about the bolt type latch. Lots of carriers I've seen online have this. It's something I will definitely look into as it is a rather cheap option compared to $30-40 latch.

Couple of day light pics of it mounted with the shitty rattle can job.

I'm going to go with the bolt through latch... just want to drive it like this for a day or so, see if anything needs to be adjusted before I take it off again to finish welding and paint it.

Looking good! Were you aware it would fit that close to the rear gate? Not much room for the accidental backing up oops. :pale:

It is kind of close... but when I put the latch on, I am going to have a rubber stop for the arm and it will actually sit out about 1/2" more then it does now. Not much more room, but its something.

I plan on cutting the horizontal arm of the carrier a little, get the tire a little closer to the arm.

Man, you've been busy! The buttresses are a good idea and should really help strengthen things.

Can you open your glass?

Yes, glass opens without issue. I even have room to move the tire back like 2", which I might still do.

HAHA. I can most definitely help you out. This thing has been slow going and time consuming given the limited resources that I have access to. So building another from scratch is not exactly on my list of things to do, anytime soon, at least.

Over the weekend, I moved the tire back a little and angled the mount slightly.

I also started working on the bolt-latch system.

I don't know Mario, maybe you need to setup the cad drawings so that you can provide them to everyone. ;)

That is coming along nicely.

I used Google Sketch-Up just to give me a 3D visual. The images at the beginning of this thread are not even done to size. LOL. I've basically been eyeing everything and designing as I go.

EDIT:

This and I have used other bumpers/carriers as inspiration, especially JD's.

Looking really good!

You might do something like this, though, with your vertical to horizontal joint... Cut a piece of flat stock 4" long by 1.75" wide, then weld it over the open end of the tube, and onto the vertical tube, so tie them together... If not, especially with the thinner 2" tube (I used 2x2x1/4), it'll pull up on the back side... (except I mated my tubes in the opposite orientation, but the tie-strap is still there)

Thanks Mike. I'll most definitely be adding a strap like you pictured.

The last few months have been very hectic... but with TECORE coming up, I've FINALLY got some updates to the bumper.

I still have to wire the taillights, and there are some spots where I need to touch up the liner. Also, that strap set up is temporary. I also need to fine a new cap for the can as the one I have has the hole for the CARB nozzle.
