Homemade Roof Top Tent

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

totally understand James. My garage is 18X25 and by the time I get tool boxes and stuff down one side and shelving down the other it is tight working on a car. I bought an A frame car port and closed it in.
I put a garage door in both ends so in the summer I can open both doors and get a breeze through. I'm really glad I did it that way.

My dad recommended going 20-24 wide but I went on the cheap and I was thinking "I won't do too much work on the car in there" :-)
Honestly except for oil changes I end up doing most work in front of the garage.

Haha, you're confusing smarts with those of us that spend too much time in the garage.

I think I can call it done for now. I can see a few minor changes that I may still do. But it's at the point where I'm going to mount it to the truck and try it out a bit. I am planning to coat it all with some nikwax solar and waterproofer to add some additional protection against the elements.

Interior. Note the slim LED light mounted to the middle cross bar.
Image

Exterior. Not exactly happy with how the rain fly is sitting... I think one of my measurements was off a little bit. I need to play with it a little more before I do anything to it. I may be fussing over minor details though. We'll see how it looks once it's all mounted.
Image

Detail of the overhead light and the switch. I may change the orientation of the zip ties though... I'm worried that they may try to wear the tent material when it's all folded up.
Image

Detail of the mounting bar. The bolts that mount into the wood are recessed into the rail to ease in loading the tent on the roof. The bar was plastic dipped on either end, and filled with a foam. I designed the mounting system to be as slimline as possible. I don't think it can get much thinner.
Image

Detail of the cinch system on the cover. There's a little more to it but not much, I wanted to keep it simple so it's just a poly-nylon rope that feeds through some webbing loops. It won't be completely sealed like some of the RTTs with a zip-on cover, but I am hoping it will be a little easier to use and a bit more robust while keeping out the elements (the zipper is one of the few complaints I hear of from RTT owners). Only time will tell I guess
Image

Hoping to have some pictures of it mounted this weekend or early next week.

The cover zipper is indeed the worst part of deploying it. Using a 3" lanyard helps me avoid climbing up on the truck six times to get it off, and now only requires two times. My knees won't take this for many more years, I have to start planning ahead.

Mounted it yesterday in the blazing 104 degree weather, then took a small weekend vacation... I'll open it all up tomorrow and take a few pictures, but I wanted to put up this little teaser.

yes, it looks great. It also looks more compact up there than some of the others. It would be interesting to see your comparisons in dimensions and weight vs the store bought models of similar size.

I really tried to get it as close to the roof as possible, and I think it turned out fairly well. In truth, if I didn't make room for the mattress and bedding, it could have been maybe 7" tall (not including the ladder). Instead it's about 9" tall, with a ~2.5" tall ladder and a 1" spacer off the roof rack, making it a total of about 12.5" off the roof.

You can kinda see it, but the passenger side is about 1.5" shorter than the driver's side right now. This is because I don't currently have the sleeping bags in there, and only 1 pillow. With the extra stuff, it should bump up the passenger side to match the driver (hinge side).

As of now, I only have about 18 miles on the tent, but things seem good so far. There isn't really any additional wind noise that I noticed, and the fuel mileage wasn't too bad considering the traffic this morning. The only time I really noticed it was when going up a hill at 55... I can normally bog down the engine, not come out of TCC lockup, and get up the hill without losing much speed... this time it seemed a little more eager to come out of lockup. I'm sure I'll get more accustomed to it as the week goes on.

Finally had a chance to open it all up yesterday. Everything seemed to work fine and my wife liked it, which was the main goal of it all to begin with.

First of all, some of the images are a bit whited out. The camera was accidentally on manual mode for some of the initial shots. They came out good enough that I didn't feel like re-taking the images.

So this is what it looks like all folded up:
Image

Here's a couple images of the unfolding process. It's all very controlled by the person holding the ladder. The only problem I ran into is that the cantilevered base does not want to sit just right on the aluminum support lip... so I had to help it into place just a bit. I'm not sure how I can remedy that.
Image

After it's unfolded, the two angled supports need to be elongated to fill out the tent. Pretty simple process, climb in, loosen two knobs, push pole out, tighten knobs.
Image

This is the lip I was talking about before. Just a bit annoying that they don't line up properly, but I am not really concerned. This gives you an idea how tight the tent is to the roof.
Image

So here it is fully deployed:
Image

Image

My wife took a few pictures of the interior while I looked on. She said the mattress was more comfortable than the one at the bed and breakfast last weekend, so I think that's quite a positive thing.
Image

Opening the sunroof/starroof really helped vent out the hot air.
Image

I guess I'm done for now. The only additional thing I think I want to add is a ladder leash that would be built into the tent itself. The way it is currently could be a real trip hazard at night.
Image

I can't wait to take out for a try. I've got a few more projects to finish up, then I think we'll try it out mid-late Aug.
