Baja Rack MegaMule with Custom Brackets

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by Jon A » Sun Nov 28, 2010 12:16 am

In shopping for a roof rack, I wanted something big, strong but low profile (garage fitment issues). Although Baja recommends the standard Mule for Trailblazers, I was convinced the Mega would fit better and I needed the space.

It did look pretty lousy just mounted to the stock crossbars:

But with the custom brackets it looks nearly made for the vehicle:

It's obvious the advantage the size gives but it's also nice for things you don't think about such as being closer to the edge of the vehicle so it's easier to load things and you can hang off a high lift in low profile fashion:

Though it was more expensive than others (paying extra shipping for the one piece as well) it is very well built and the utility it adds makes it well worth it. A few shots of various uses:

Gathering wood for a bonfire:

About 250 lbs of guns and deer meat:

Heavy steel targets and portable bench:

Dinner:

I made the brackets from 3/4" square tubing and 1/2" clamps (both from McMaster):

They fit inside the tracks but you do have to spread them a bit--so don't use this method if you want to use the stock crossbars in those locations in the future.

With six total locations and a direct loadpath you have many times the strength of the stock setup. Do a better job of prep and paint on them that I did though as you can see a bit of rust on mine already...I'm going to have to take those off and hit them again.

I really like the Megamule. It does seem to fit a bit better than mine does.

It looks shorter than mine too... I think mine was 6" tall? Looks good with the lower profile.

Hey Jon, can you post a link or Part no for the 1/2 clamps you used. I'm working on plans for my second generation roof rack and I like how you used those for mounting the rack to the roof rails. I want to look into using them (larger size of course) also for mounting my Yakima bars to the my new rack for when I need to load up my kayaks.

Thanks,
Mike

I definitely need to see what this looks like vs the regular mule on a TV. Tough decisions...

I found what I was looking for. They are called Shaft Collars. I found weldable 2-piece collars which will do just fine.

I'm sorry Mike, I completely missed that. I used part # 6436K14 at McMaster.

They look like the ones sold by Baja Rack on their web site.

Really like what you did here, looks great.

Out of curiosity, did you experiment with modifying the stock xbar mounts before you had to build your own?

I used the crossbar mounts to flush mount my mega mule to the rails, Just use the top part of the mount and 1/4" thick x 1" wide steel cut to length of top mount drill holes and you can either put the bolt or the nut on the bottom mount but it needs to be tacked or j-b welded into place, I j-b'd the nut to the bottom mount and then slide the bottom mount in the rail track(you may need to grind the sides of bottom mount to fit in track); Line up the bottom mount where you want it and bolt down rack from top. I wouldn't use the stock bolts that came with the baja rack as they can be loosened by hand. I will try to find the pics I took of this set up or take more.

This modded mounting cost me less than $15.
