8.6 EXT rear end swap into a SWB...driveshaft questions?

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

I'm doing this swap after work tonight. Just got thinking... will the driveshaft need to be a different length? I'm putting a 8.6 in place of the 8.0 in my SWB 2003... if I need something different for a DS I don't want to start the swap until I have the right unit or get mine shortened if that's what it needs

No you are good, only swapping to the much bigger SS axle (9.5 ring gear) need a adapter 477 and shorting of DS.

Now would be good time to check the U-joins once the driveshaft is off the truck. There should be no play. If there is the OEM joints will need to be burnt out. You will see two white plastic injection spots. Heat the main body of the DS where these injection spots are until the plastic stops coming out, you will need a lot of heat, I had to use two gas torches. I had to replace my rear joint like a couple weeks before I swapped, go figure.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice!

I am curious to see how much more entertaining these 4:56 gears and the Detroit truetrac make the ride.

Why didn't you just get a locker?

Because he had a 8.0" and there are only two options a G80 and true track.

There is a third option and it's what I'm going with, Miller. :thumleft:

Sounded like he was talking about putting a TT into his new 8.6

Yes it did mike, thanks for that. And also I didn't know the 4.56 fit into 8, then again, I never looked. I thought 4.11 was it.

Yes, I did 4.56 gears and a Detroit truetrac into an 8.6. Reason being it was cheaper for the truetrack than the locker by a couple hundred and the street manners are better, which is where my rig spends 99% of its time.

How is it with the new setup. It's something i dream of doing but always fear getting stuck with the g80. Just did a drain and fill last weekend and all the bolts were siezed anyway.
