Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Drive shaft length or motor mounts

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by anthonyl79 » Sun Apr 10, 2016 6:01 pm

At my wits end here, swapping a 5.3 into a 4.2 envoy that is 4x4. Got factory mounts and mount brackets but the transmission cross-member doesn't line up. So do I have 2x4 mounts and its pulled the motor forward or is it sitting in the right spot. Cant find numbers on the mounts or was trying to see if the drive shaft is a different length. That could tell me, but NO one seems to have the rear shaft. So does anyone know the stock length on the rear shaft from a 2x4 and 4x4?

Thanks!

You have the stock I6 trans mount you're trying to use?

If I remember correctly the shorter V8 moves everything forward a few inches, consequently everything moves forward too

That's what I've noticed. According to GM the crossmember is the same, mounting location to the frame moved forward on the V8.

Does anyone out there know the length on the V8 driveshaft by chance?

I'll measure for you when I get home tonight.

Usually, GM keeps the bellhousing location the same, everything moves forward or backward from that zero location.

I do know the front driveshafts have different part numbers, one can assume the length is the difference since the front diff and trans case is the same. The front diff needs to be in the same location by virtue of it needing to line up with the suspension

http://www.ebay.com/itm/06-07-08-09-TRA ... 0765620361

Per that eBay ad the front driveshaft is the same on the 5.3 and 6.0 trucks and is 34.25 inches.

You could double verify it by comparing that to your I6 driveshaft I believe.

Plus you'll have a measurement here in a bit from a v8 truck LOL

Tony, you got any more details on this process? Any place you've been documenting it at? For example what all you've had to change, adapt, etc?

I haven't done a swap like this on the new canbus vehicles, I'm interested in seeing what all you've come up with/against... as I'm sure others are too.

Well thanks to Jrgunn I have found the correct shaft. The local junk yard has one. The stock i6 measures 36" center of joint to center of joint. From what you told me yours is 38.5" center of joint to center of joint. Measuring the placement of the transmission mount on the transmission cross member it moved 2.5". So fabricated a new cross member from the old one and its all mounted up. I need to get some pictures but I'll do that when I pull it to paint it.

Thansk again Jrgunn for answering the question that I couldn't find anywhere.
