Front Lock right locker noise

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

So I finally finished my front diff over the weekend. Installed the diff I bought off of Mike Key with 4.10 gears. Installed the awd sleeve and the Lockright locker. I am hearing a faint noise in low speed turns in 2wd, a faint bump,bump,bump and is rotation related. I punctured the boot on my driver side CV which slung out some grease. I thought it might have been there CV axle. I replaced the CV with one from O'Reillys but I still have the noise. I know the lockright could make a little noise but am curious if the sound is consistent with what others are hearing? Everything sounds good going straight. It is coming from the driver side. If I remember correctly the noise is the same in 2wd and 4wd. It is also the same off road and on pavement. You cannot hear it with the windows up. You have to really listen for it.

That 'bumb bump' is just the outside wheel causing the locker to 'ratchet' as it speeds up during a turn. Nothing to be alarmed of, however you cannot run this locker with 4wd engaged on dry pavement, or any surface that does not allow enough give to relieve binding.

I knew it was supposed to ratchet but it isn't the sound I expected. No worries about running in 4wd on pavement. We can't really do that anyway. Are you running the lockright in the front?

Yeah, that's the sound they make.

You'll also want to put a REAL locker in the rear, if you haven't already. The slippage that the G80 takes to work puts a lot of extra load on the front end, and it'll be more likely to break.

Sounds like the ratcheting of my rear lockright.

Curious to how fully locked will treat you on off-chamber mud or snow.

Mike, I actually have a g86 in the rear, but that is a story for another day. I'll have to see how this setup works. If it doesn't work out I may upgrade the rear as well. I expect it will work for my needs just fine. I may never fully put it to the test. I mainly got the front locker because I had the money at the time, they were disappearing from the market and I only wanted to have to pull the front diff once.

The G86 is the LSD out of the SS, right? Even worse! Quite literally, any time you slip one rear wheel at all (or even before that), you are putting the front to the test. Ideally, you want the stronger axle to have the full-on locker, and the weaker one to have the LSD, because the one with the locker will get more stress than the one with the LSD, because it's effectively one with a locker and another with an open diff. That goes for the G86 or the G80. What you have is the weaker axle with more weight on it taking all the load. That's something you'll have to be REALLY careful with, regarding your throttle application!

I can't hear anything out of my lock right, it's supposed to ratchet but how loud is this noise? I hear almost nothing.

Not from my research but it varies between model n axle. Been opened and inspected twice and all looks good. Its just a solid click. If I don't hear it it worries me til the tire scrubs.

I think it came out of a Bravada, it is the 8.6 version. It was supposed to be open. I had the no-slip ready to go in but I couldn't source a carrier locally and the junkyard that shipped it wouldn't work with me. I ended up selling it to JD. I'll take it easy and see what happens. If I tear something up I'll just have to fix it and go from there.

It is very faint. I have to have the radio and AC off and the windows down making a slow speed turn.

AFAIK, the Bravada never had the V8 or the LWB, so never got anything other than the 8.0"

Mike, it might have been the Saab 9-7. When I opened it up, it was clear that it wasn't open or the G80. It took a little digging to verify it was the G86. There were also ride level sensors on the control arms.

Ah, gotcha. I wasn't aware that anything other than the SS had a G86, but a quick Internet search says the Saab did get the G86.

I think the Bravada also got a g86, but in a 8.0. The AWD variants seem to not get G80s.
