Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Need a new rear end

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by Trailblazin02 » Wed Apr 01, 2015 8:52 am

So I'm pretty sure the rear end in my 02 tb is junk. She don't move and makes a bunch of grinding/ clunking sounds when it's in gear.
I plan on replacing it witha salvaged rear.
What's my best option when looking for a replacement?

Depends on your mission. What gearing do you have? Are you looking for something locking or planning to add a better aftermarket locker?

I have the 3.73 gears. Idk. If I can find something that's locking it would be nice. I do some off-roading/ mudding when going hunting and fishing. I'm looking for a quick fairly easy fix for now

Where are you located?

Grab one from a junkyard and roll with it. Basic upgrade with a quickness and ease would be the 8.6 with G80 and your same 3.73.

I'm in northern Illinois by Rockford.
I did a little quick search last night and kinda looked on ebay to see what was available. There's a ton of salvage yards around so I'll need to start calling. What you recommended is what I was leaning towards Just wasn't sure if I was on the right track or not

Ok guys I found this one 45 miles away. They want $440 does that seem like a fair price? An this will bolt in to my 2002?
And have you heard anything about the Spohn performance rear upper and lower arms they sell?

That is the smaller 8.0 but a direct replacement.

You might want to get through the rearend discussion before mixing in the control arms or things get complicated. Maybe even a new thread or search and post about them in one of the existing control arm threads.

It will bolt in, but the wheel sensors are different on 06 and up. I'm not sure if you can swap sensors on the axles.

You can put any axle in the older trucks like his. You throw a code and lose stabilitrak trying to put a old axle in an 06 or newer. The info is mentioned plenty of times around the site.

It sucks I'm on my phone at work trying to get this figured out. Otherwise I normally hit the forums pretty hard rather then just tell me what I need.
How would I search to find a 8.6" rear? We're those in the v8 models?

G86 is the limited slip rear but should work well for what you described. Will bolt right in. Will have sensors toward the wheel ends of the axle tubes you do not need with your older model. Cut the wires and just leave the sensors to plug the holes.

If you found it on Car-Part, make sure you call, and stress that they absolutely have the part, I've been burned before.

I did some more looking they have 2 listed with G80 and a bunch with the g86. And they're all around $330 which don't seem bad. They have 128k & 99k miles on the ones listed with g80.

You will likely only ever notice a difference if you get one of the rear tires off the ground.
