Some come stock with 4.10s in the 8.0tsmith1156 wrote:Moots1288 wrote:Yoy can build it in the stock axle

I wasn't sure how strong it would be if the axle could support a 4.10

Shdwdrgn wrote:When I swapped mine last year, I got a complete 8.6 rear axle with <100k miles for around $350 + shipping. If you can avoid shipping, you'll save a lot of money. If you are doing the swap anyway, save yourself headaches down the road and get an 8.6 axle. As stated earlier, it is a direct fit to a SWB. Also I was concerned that a larger gear would impact my clearance, but all of the additional height is at the top -- the ground clearance stays the same between the 8.0 and 8.6 axles. Your existing calipers, rotors, etc will all fit the larger axle.
As for the front... you would specifically swap the differential. It is self-contained and separate from the axles. Since you have a gear man, you could just change out the gears in the same housing. I didn't have that option, and paid a small fortune to have a complete differential shipped to me.
Shdwdrgn wrote:The reason for getting the whole rear axle is that you have an 8.0 now and you want an 8.6.
Remember what I said before... rear axle you can use anything from 2002-2005 (Trailblazer EXT, Envoy XLT). Those shouldn't be too hard to find, and you can try to get something low-mileage.
The front differential can come from any year, although the SS models seem to be the easiest to locate (but it still took me three months to find one) -- however since you have a gear guy, just use your existing diff and install new 4.10 gears in it.
Note that after you make this swap, there is a good chance you get frequent ABS warnings. Updating the PCM for 4.10 gears will correct that.
