Regearing?

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

So 4.56s would be the best.. Buy a 8.6 with 3.42 no locker, buy 4.56 gears swap them in put a detriot locker in then regear the front diff with 4.56. Will my stock front diff be able to handle 4.56 gears? And will I be okay with 31.5" tires with 3.42 gears on the highway going 90mph without over heating for around 4 years until I'm done college and have the time and money to do it? I have a transmisson oil cooler too.

Front diffs are the same no matter the gearing so put what ever you want in.

I spent years w 3.73 and 33s without issues so You ought to be fine.

You'll be fine. Just have a scangauge or something to keep it in positive check. I'm running 3.42s with a hayden trans cooler and my 32.5" tires are on their way. I've also got a scangauge to monitor temps.

I have this exact setup, and am doing the exact setup. I've been running the 32's and 3.42's all year, and about 20,000 miles now.

Every fool in the world with a Z71 runs bigger tires yet, and they come stock with 31's, so it will be fine.

Hoods make them slower by far but add crazy mpg, but are fun if cheap enough...like less than the cost of one tire.

I def don't need to spend over $500 on a hood... But they just look so damn nice.... More important right now is my new rims and tires,

@Rickalicka18 -- I'm with these guys, don't even bother going from 3.42 to 3.73. I was nervous as hell when I contemplated swapping gears, dropping all the way to 4.10's seemed like such a huge jump, how could that possibly work for me??? I ended up writing the gear ratio calculator just so I could see for myself the differences between gears, tire sizes, and RPMs. After looking over the numbers for months I came to realize that while it *sounds* like a big leap, it really isn't.

Case in point -- after swapping my gears, I had to take a long trip. Over 800 miles each direction across two states, I averaged around 90mph (shhh don't tell anyone!). My engine stayed within a comfortable range (somewhere around 3000rpm when I pushed it) and I had no troubles with the trip. Most of my driving is in rush-hour traffic, but there have been no problems with getting out on the highway whenever I need to, and the vehicle is a lot more responsive when I need it.

By the way, if you look at the gear calculator, you'll notice that the difference between 4.10s and 3.42s at highway speeds is less than 350rpm. So again, as already mentioned, don't even both swapping 3.42s for 3.73s. One other thought occurred to me -- perhaps you think you need to do a gear swap because 4.10s aren't available? The 4.10s were a stock option, and because you have a 2006 you actually have more availability than I did.

Let me know how that goes when you go on the highway. Might not have rims and tires for a couple months, rims will be first though. Just wanna make sure the temps don't ruin my already beat on transmisson (doughnuts in the winter are just too fun... Followed by the drag races with stupid ricers)

I monitored my trans temp for awhile, it never got over 190, and I got bored, so I quit lol.

I feel that. I go 90+ all the time. I'm just a fast driver haha. I'll wait till im out of college and do the swap to 4.56 gears.

Not a stupid question at all, pretty smart one really. With the stock cooling, it should run with the coolant temp, since it's running through the radiator. I wouldn't want to see it over 220. With my B&M cooler, I run around 170 usually. I wouldn't want it under 150, as just like with oil, trans fluid has a temp range it works best in.

Shibbyyy. The only thing I'll miss is being able to beat people in drag races... I'll probably drive a lot slower because I'm paranoid and will think I'm hurting my transmisson.

Throw a cooler on it, and a Corvette servo in it, and go beat on it, it'll be fine. I just rolled 205k on mine, with a 5.3

Speaking of trans temps, what exactly is "too hot" for us? I have a scangauge and all but I don't really even know what a dangerous temp is. I'm guessing 200+?
