CV boot that stays together?

well the other day it was noticed that the silicone boot has torn. Maybe on my last outing in Jersey, maybe not. Don't reckon I'll ever know. It's a small 1/2" tear inbetween the ribs. Maybe I'll look for a detroit axle rebuild, maybe I'll toss on another silicone one. I dunno yet. This is the longest lasting boot yet. But it's still annoying.

the biggest issue seems to be the number of pleats. Everything else I was finding a year ago had three and it's not enough... hell that's what the detroits are showing on ebay. I don't think I'm any higher than Kyle though. Maybe it's just the fact they are using neoprene for the boots that keeps them alive in the three pleat style. I'll have to find some neoprene boots and give it a shot. I'd hate to replace the whole axle considering they're only a year old.

I never had a boot problem with Masterpro's (Oreilly House brand). I broke outer CVs on those, but no more often than I did with the OEM ones.

Best part was plopping it down on the counter and walking out with a new one for free when they did break.

I miss oreilleys lol

Every AutoZone and advanced auto half shaft I've had has destroyed the boots within hours of putting them on. I'm only 41"at the top of the fender opening. I dunno why I have no luck.

Rockauto has the neoprene boots for $12.60. I'm gonna give it a try. The Detroit axle rebuilds use neoprene and seem to hold up, so maybe this will be the ticket despite being three pleats.

My impressions of this boot are that it's probably the best option I've tried yet. The install was basically the same as for the silicone boot except I didn't have to cut up the old boot to adapt anything. This boot appears to be made for the 360 platform and installs with no fuss. The neoprene is significantly thicker than the silicone and drastically more compliant than the stock boot. I installed this on one of my old stock spares that had a ripped boot. It didn't seem to have any appreciable wear so I should be good to go assuming the boot holds up. I used some stainless worm gear clamps since that seems to work well and then I wrapped it in electrical tape and coated the tape with some liquid electrical tape to hopefully keep it from unraveling.
I'll install tomorrow and update when it fails.

The cartons selects are built better and have a extended boot. I switched my old ones out and put these in and even with marks 3' lift and the 81114 no rip or failure yet

Do you have pics? When I bought the Cardones from rock auto I got a 3 rib boot and the boot self destructed in very short order... it's mentioned earlier in this thread. I'm under the impression that these neoprene boots are the same ones used on the Detroit axle rebuilds that Hardtrailz is using. He's had good luck so I'm just building on what he reported earlier in this thread. I'm replacing just the boot cause I already have 4 CVs ( including the ones on the truck). seems silly to spend on a whole new axle since they are fine other than the boot. Not to mention the stock ones seem to have better capability at operating at a steep angle, as documented in the thread.

I would imagine you'll be fine with your height, my problems seem to stem from using 89s with the 3" lift.

If this doesn't work I may get a leather cover for the boot to help protect it from puncture and see if that'll square me away. I believe it was trail debris that did in the silicone boot.

It may be of interest that as of yesterday the other silicone boot has completely torn apart. The neoprene is still holding up fine.

haven't been off-road once, drivers side neoprene boot tore open at the top of a rib. Nothing else to update.

I took em out for some maintenance the other day, one silicone boot was still intact and the neoprene one was doing fine as well. Probably a half dozen trips offroad.
The neoprene is a good bit thicker and the silicone one is fairly delicate. I'd likely go with neoprene replacements held on with the worm gear clamps or the detroit axle rebuilds that Kyle commonly recommends (assuming they're still using the neoperene boots).

I am running the Detroit axles(with the neoprene boots) they have been in for about 4 months and I tore both inners in same week and only one time offroad just to see how my new wheel and tire set up did. So you recommend the moog boot 5444 that you have know to somebody with the same trouble

It's what I'm currently using and it seems fine. Oddly enough the other silicone one has held up ok as well, but the neoprene seems a lot more durable.

When you swap boots take care to make sure the boot isn't overly high or low on the shaft.
