Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Im such an axle

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by T8erN8ion » Wed Feb 09, 2011 1:10 am

Ok question of the day. I was interested in a particular axle however after some research I see it does not fit what im looking for. So i ask the opinion of my peers.

Looking to do an SAS, what axle should I choose? Front? Rear?

Looked into the unimog axles, little to aggresive. Mind you I will be running shaved 22.5 to 22 Alcoa Super Single wheels

Why don't you tell us what you were looking at and we can judge if you were on the right track. Personally, I'd be looking at a Dana 44. 60 is way overkill.

Unimog might be OK if you want to keep it to Unimog speeds on the highway getting TO the trails. Like 50 MPH. The clearance gained by a portal axle is not worth that major annoyance.

What ARE you trying to do with this vehicle? What is your goal?

Is it going to be a show poodle? If so, I think you're in the wrong place, pal.

A lot of randomness going on around here lately. Unimog axles....zombiekillers.......random SAS swaps waiting on tires......

D44F/D60R, or a pair of D60s... Depends on what kind of rubber you're running, and what you're planning on doing... Depends on your driving style, as well... I could probably make a D44R/D30F combo live, but I drive with emphasis on being easy on equipment... Guys on Pirate break 35 spline Cromo outers on D60Fs, with 4L Jeeps that have 100 less HP than we have, and weigh less... A lot of those guys who do that, drive their equipment with complete disregard for its life, like they're TRYING to break it...

If you go with a D44 front, make sure it's out of a 3/4 ton, because the outers will be D44 outers (as opposed to the 1/2 ton D44s that are basically D30 outers), and it'll have thicker tubes...

If you follow what Mike said you may be able to make your conversion. D60 is highly recommended but you can get acceptable results from the D44. Just stay away from the D30 because it has been known to not allow it to flux. :mechanic:

Aside from zombies, I think the easiest thing to do would be a D44 up front and put the ss axle in the rear. You won't have to worry about fabbing up the rear, and although I don't know the strength of the ss axle, 37"-38" tires would sound about right for the max.... Just not sure how high of gears you can put in the ss axle.....

Well whats the spline count for the SS rear? And I think this is a good spot to have this guy here even if he wants 22" rims. It'll be nice to see whats involved in this process.

I think once my TB is payed off I'll be doing a SAS as well. Shortly I'll be doing a Ext rear with a no-slip.

For the SAS I was thinking D44 up front with selectable locker and prob just keep the 8.6 in the rear and re-gear to accommodate the tires (37's at most). Just get the longer control arms, extended brake lines and cut what needs to be cut. At least if that'll be sufficient enough.

If not then D60's front and rear.

And FYI the SS axle should be able to take whatever gears you'd be thinking of, even the Ext 8.6 can go up in the 5's... Only thing holding us up is with front diff, only goes to 4.56's.

33 spline... there are 5.38 gears out there for it... though I think as 4.88 would be a better choice at the 37-38" range. 4.56 would even be usable. Remember that numerically higher gears have weaker teeth.

I am thinking 44 front and either 14 bolt or 9 inch rear. I got a matched set of each.

I was thinking more smaller, no more than 33-35.. SO I would probably use Landcruiser axles, they have the correct front driveline position, parts are all over the place for em, and they are close to the same width.

Why not go with a pair of the Dynapro Pro-Rock 44's or 60 inner with 40 outter? If your looking at Unimog portals the cost would probably be close to the same only a much lighter axel and custom to your rig.

An option that the jeep guys like to go with is the FORD 8.8 (ford exploer's), CHRYSLER 8.25 (certain cherokee's) and hell the ZJ guys are starting to take the axles off of rubi JK's and use them.

And with any axle I'm getting for my jeep is I'm sleeving it and putting a truss on it.

Most of the jk guys are sleeving theirs. None of the stockers are real strong. Lots of offering for jk axles out there now and the width may be close with the right wheels. I still would go one off instead though.

I would suggest sleeving regardless especially in the JK axles since they ARE a D44A axle which is considerably weaker then traditional D44 axles.

I got a D44A axle in my ZJ so if measurements are needed just let me know. Who knows it might be the same width or close. ANd the ZJ is coil all around.

I have a matched pair of ford axles and of chevy axles. Both have front 44 so I will likely use one of those sets, gm seem to be recommended by the guys that conversions. The fords are already pulled though I don't know gears on them.
