LockRight Front Locker Installed

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

You answered all of my questions that I thought about while trying to sleep.

What will this type of locker do if it were put in the rear diff?

bartonmd wrote:The only thing I'll add is that it more than likely spins the front prop shaft in 2WD, which gives some parasitic loss, which will affect fuel mileage, slightly...

I wouldn't think the prop shaft would spin because the diff shouldn't be locked without torque coming from the TC. Then A4WD couldn't work.

I have the No-Slip in my rear end...the No-Slip is just a Lock Right with synchros to help the disengagement for turns. It's barely noticeable on the street. If you upgrade to an 8.6" rear axle you'd be using the No-Slip like me, as a regular Lock Right isn't available for the 8.6" 8" guys are out of luck.

The front prop shaft will spin since there are no spider gears to pull the movement out of the front assembly now. Mine already is in this scenario since I welded up disconnect shut... it's really no big deal.

In other news, according to the FSM, you take backlash readings from the pinion shaft on our front diff's rather than the ring gear. So it's theoretically possible that I could do my gear swap without pulling the whole unit. We'll see I guess.

I guess I was thinking it had a mechanism to make it act either like it had spider gears or like there is no diff while in the unlocked mode.

So is it normally locked except when negotiating a turn?

Essentially, yes. If the driveshaft has power then it locks, but can unlock for the outer wheel to spin faster in a turn.

That would be about as good as you can get for offroad performance. The only advantage selectable lockers would have is that you can turn them off on the highway. But as fishsticks mentioned you need to swap to an 8.6” axle for that. There are many choices for the 8.6”.

The only better-than-G80 option for the 8” is the Truetrac. It isn’t quite as good as a locker offroad but it’ll be much better than the G80 in nearly all situations (especially after adding the front locker) and is a very nice all around diff. I’m actually strongly leaning toward going this route for several reasons.

Well thanks, but don’t give me too much credit. Otherwise when you break something you’ll give me too much credit for that as well! :-x Heh, seriously though, all standard disclaimers apply—durability of the front diff is entirely untested with this mod. So keep your brain connected to your right foot.

But if you want even more inspiration and performance comments, check this thread out:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/sho ... hp?t=87218

While I’m no Exploder fan, they are a somewhat similar sized platform with a solid axle rear and an IFS front that lacks travel (so pulling front wheels is common) so the performance comments about the lockright/noslip in front are somewhat applicable. Due to the AWD system on some models they need to jump through a bunch more hoops to install it than we do. Anyway, interesting reading.

Jon, just wanted to say thanks again for going through with this. After doing all the research I knew I wanted this awhile ago, but never got around to it. Seeing someone do it seems to have lit a fire under my ass to finally get my front axle done. My front Lock Right will be here Wednesday.

I was having trouble picturing how these work, so the following two youtube videos really helped.

Figured I'd post them here:

I've never heard my No-Slip, but it's got extra synchros to help disengagement... I also run 140 weight shock proof gear oil in my rear diff.

To answer James' question from the OS: Since the front propshaft is dead in 2WD, the whole unit will spin just like normal. There won't be enough differential force to cause the teeth on the Lockright to overrun each other. The only time tooth overrun happens is when the outer wheel of in a turn spins faster than the rest of the assembly, which disengages that side of the drive/coupler and allows overrun.

Jon, how has the front locker been holding up so far? Have you put it to any more use since you last posted?

Great information here and pictures, wish I had more pictures when I had my 4.56 gear swap done.

I was considering adding the Lockright back then (summer of 2008) along with the Auburn Ected in the rear but had a couple of trips right around the corner (Carlisle and CampNL) and didn't want to push it with untested (for us) parts.

Since then I have thought about it but realistically have never come up to a situation where it would have made a difference, the electronically locked rear has taken me through everything I have thrown at it (with 4WD on of course).

However, it doesn't mean that its not a worthwhile addition for me some time in the future. Although I would probably combine it with something else I have been thinking about, but unfortunately neither is in the cards for the near future.

Thanks again!

AlekG

Unfortunately I’ve been extremely busy and haven’t gotten out to play lately. I’m going to be receiving some new bullets that’ll need to be tested at long range in the next couple of weeks though, so I’m going to have to try and get to my mountain shooting spot. It’s likely buried under several feet of snow right now plus a couple more this week so I’m doubtful I’d have a chance of getting up there right now. In a week or two? Maybe, the only way to find out is to try. It could be a big challenge.

And we're getting dumped on at my house right now so it will probably get a bunch of use pulling out stuck people in the next couple of days.

I've been following this thread for a few months now, and I believe I'm gonna pull the trigger on getting one. Fish with the size tires your run, if there was a problem with it, it probably would of shown up by now.

The 2nd part of the video has me questioning that guy, grinding off a part of the ring gear, just cause he didn't want to pull the carrier, but hey to each their own.

How does this product work with the different gear ratios? Do you specify what ratio you want when ordering the product? Is it universal? Does the gear ratio have nothing to do with this and I'm sounding like a noob jackass?
