Priced G80 rear with 3.73

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by Dizzlenator » Tue Sep 22, 2009 1:36 pm

So, I stopped by my local J/Y today, and asked about a G80. At first, he had no clue what I was talking about, until I explained all of the info to him. All info he had was the rear end gearing codes. So, we ended up driving around his lot. 1 EXT, 1 Denali Envoy and a regular Envoy, and I didn't find one. The regular had one, but the rear end had been long since taken. So, I am still on the hunt. The guy made a couple of calls to some other yards in the NE and said he could get me 1 for $800. I am pretty sure I can beat that, but haven't started really hunting on the web. Anybody know where one is for less?? I'll drive a decent distance (PA is pretty much the line) to get it. No real rush on it, as I won't really "need it" until April/May when we do the next GWNF trip.

http://www.car-part.com/ has some of the best junkyard resources. You can sort the results by price, etc.

You're aiming for an 8.6" ring gear rear, right?

I don't know. I was really just looking for the G80 with 3.73's....Should I be looking for the 8.6"??? Benefits to 8.6" vs. the stocker with G80?

Holy moley! Strength, my good man! More splines on the axles! And the ability to install a selectable locker and 4.56 gears later if you want to upgrade like AlekG!!

For $435, I got an entire 8.6" EXT axle WITH G80 - installed in 4 hours - no setting up the gears. Fewer miles. Wasn't bent like my old one.

Surely you aren't such a noob ;) that you missed this thread:

ouch, and yet again roadie lays down the law.

that thread you had on your re build of the rear end on ur envoy was excellent and answered a lot of question i had about my truck.

im glad i have the 8.6 with the g80 stock. just hate the 3.42. seriously thinking of going to 3.73 or 3.90 but no higher then that.

Yah. Don't have to be quite so polite here. You'll regret this, though. Soon. :coffee:
...3.90...
4.10. Bet you didn't think you'd get corrected this soon, though. :angry whip:

There are some on ebay right now, but a tad 'pricey'. 75 per strut + 20 per shipping. However, the seller has the best offer option :coffee:

Teebes is waiting so long to copy my trick of the EXT rear end that I'm very worried he's going to skip that one and leapfrog me again.

Hehe, but he also has the wussy 14mm tie rod ends. All 2002 should schedule an upgrade to 16mm. :poke:

Thanks for the links, Greg. I've been doing pretty good with my current setup. I don't plan on doing a steel bumper, winch, or anything else of significant weight up front right now... but I'll keep them in mind. :friday:

i've seen the whole struts before for the ext's just never seen or found a place to just buy springs where you can select spring rate... which is kinda a problem considering i definately don;'t want to get the wrong ones. also dan i found the ext rear axle anywhere from 250 to 400 with my gears (same as you 3.42's) but i'm waiting to see if i should just go for the gold and get the iron H3 front diff

I finally found pics of the H3 diff, and the housing is not like ours. Ring gear seems to be, but not the housing. And we already know from AlekG that their 4.56 gear set fits.

my ext is so slugish with the 6cyl trying to move the new wheels and tires. i am def looking into changing the gearing. mas gas millage is sooo bad, i think going to 3.73 or 3.90 would get some efficeincy back since the truck wouldnt have to work so hard to get up to speed and hold it there. it hunts around 4th and 3rd quite a bit, even after i my pcm for less tune. which i may add needs to be sent back for corrections.

to be honest. i really want to toss the 6cy and get the 5.3 dod. i have the same engine in my avalanche and i love it. plus the epa ratings for the mpg on my ext are better with the v8 because again, you dont have to push it as much as compared to a 6cyl.

so choices choices choices. need to save up some more scratch first hahaha.

Hey Zero!

:thumright: You know you could take all the goodies off and trade it for one with the engine and gearing you want. :thumleft:
