KC Daylighter for FREE!!

Breaker 1-9, anybody got a copy? Any discussion or mods relating to electrons and wires go here.

by Cable810 » Sun Jun 24, 2012 9:04 pm

My buddy that gave me a hand with installing my lift he gave me 2 KC Daylighters for FREE :excited: !! They are a tad rusty which some time, and paint wont fix :D Sadly I do not know what wattage they are. He didn't give me the rest of the wiring which I'm cool with. So could I get the 130w wiring and it be ok if they are the 100w?

Put HID bulbs in them and then you don't have to worry about wiring/wattage.

Now thats a cool Idea! Would I have to get the full HID kit, or just the bulbs and the wiring harness? Alos would it matter on what bulb size I get?
Just gotta be easy on how much I'm spending right now.

Every single vehicle I own has (at least) one of these kits on them.

Pull one of the bulbs out of the lights. There's be a code stamped on it (H3) for example. That's the bulb type you need.

My cheap self-contained offroad HIDs interfere horribly with CB. Don't yours?

My CB reception/transmission is great in the TB. Uniden Pro520XL.

I have issues in the Yota, but the CB is a pile of crap Radio Shack I bought one morning before a trail run. Yota has a couple grounding issues as well.

Neither related to HIDs IMO.

I'm thinking on mounting them to the bumper, as thats the only spot as of right now. I'm not seeing how I'm gunna mount/fit the HIDs ballasts. I see how Mario did it, but If I was to do that there would be no room and I'd be better off just getting the new wiring. So anyone got thoughts on where I could tuck the ballasts?

Assuming that I will NOT have to do a cap mod due to the fact that the ballasts willl be at full power!?!?

Hi Caleb, unless you build some kind of support to mount the lights to, I think you will have to cut some pretty decent sized holes in the front bumper for the lights to sit down in. I know there is one member that did that but I don't recall who at the moment.

I found more out about the lights. KC dosn't make them any more. KC Daylighter 150w... which they replaced with the 130w. Which I have no clue what the bulb is other than the replacement is 2627..

You might want to do a quick wiring job on them to see what the pattern looks like. Most people buy KCs just for the "cool" retro look. The patterns leave much to be desired because they are basically just spotlights.

The bulbs are not readily replaceable with HID bulbs, as I believe the KC hilights system was built roughly around the PAR 36 series of lights. The "bulb" is an assembly and includes the lens and reflector. Very old tech.

I'd throw em out and spend money on something worthwhile.

Yep.... Thats what I found out this afternoon. Oh well I'll give them back. Looking at getting some Blazer Baja Lights from walmart. Just don't have the $$ for better ones yet. Didn't you use them in your Light Bar Build James?

I would just wait until you can afford better. Why do it twice?

I figure they are better than the ones you already have mounted.
I'm a cheap skate, I would make sure they work, clean them up and build a light bar and put them on there.
I would connect them in such a way to make them easy to replace later on.I would go ahead and run a heavy enough wire to do whatever you plan to do (4 lights, 2 switches/relays). They would be of some use for now until you can afford (Christmas wishlist?) better. When you get new lights you should be able to swap them out pretty easy and not have to go through all the wiring trouble again.

They are also a similar design to a lot of other lights on the market, you could hook up those 2, get 2 better ones down the road to give you 4 then two better ones down the road to get 4 good ones and use the KC's on the rear if you want. Go ahead and make a plan of what your end result should be and try to make sure you don't have to re-do anything later on.
