Breaker 1-9, anybody got a copy? Any discussion or mods relating to electrons and wires go here.

I am thinking about putting togther a special LED Rock Light package available to members and I would like to get some input as to what you all would like to see in a package. I have started the list but feel free to add your input. I would love to hear your likes / dislikes regarding rock lights that you may have previously purchased for your truck.

Is there a enough demand for LED Rock Lights ?
Do members use them ?

Sounds about right for everything. Any pic of possible lights to be used?

something else you might have access to that the community might be interested in would be LED utility/offroad lights.
I plan to get 2 LED utility lights to shoot toward the rear of my TB for night fishing and for just backing up at night. I could leave them on a long time with little battery drain. I've got a few other things to take care of first before I get the lights.

Also do they make a reasonable LED to use as a normal offroad light? I expect for enough lumens to be effective they are still rather pricey.

First

I did an LED auxillary driving light project a while back and posted it on the below link. It explains costs, part#'s, where to order stuff, and how to build some relatively cheap ($40 pair) LED lights. Link has alot of pictures.
Each light I think was about 350 lumen. Great project.

Second

The light I am considering using is a very small waterproof pod which has 5 LEDs and is bright enough to light up under the truck. See picture of light at below link. I also have some brighter pods that I can use if need be - for the same price point. I don't have pictures of them on my website though.

I have been searching LED Rock Light kits on the web and alot of the kits are overpriced and available on website that cater to 4X4 cmmunity. LEDs are LEDs. They can light anything from a Buffet table to the underneath of a truck. The lights we are talking about all will draw about 30-60 milliamp per light. You can leave them on for along while without draining down your full size truck battey and they are virtually no load to your charging system. LEDs are the most versatile light source available and my lights can run on straight off 12vdc

I can definitely put together a quality kit and a good price compared to some of the offerings I have seen.

LED offroad driving lights are high power and start in the 900 lumen range. Not cheap and probably never will be compared to incandescent halogens

There are literally thousands of different leds and different drive currents so the number of LEDs is not as important as the LED type, model, color temp, drive current, power, ...etc
I would use the lights lumen output @ 12vdc source voltage.

These rock lights are mounted at what about 12 to 24 inches above grade ?

For instance if you use a cool white LED then you can use less power and actually render the objects in view better. Your eyes will percieve the objects better and be able to differentiate between solids and shadows better than with a warm white light.

I have some 3 led pods that kick out 20 lumen per light and run on 12vdc. They illuminate a small area (10' x 10') very well. Now I am thinking with 8 of them on a truck underbody it should be more than enough light to illuminate the terrain surface to about 2-4 footcandles

Makes sense. I would likely be interested depending on price.

A major cost would be a remote control that runs off a key fob versus a toggle switch up mount on your dash. I prefer remotes and use them for everything - basically because I hate bringing wiring through the firewall. One reason I bouth the WARN lights for my truck. They come with a remote. Everything just goes in the engine compartment and you have a key fob control.

Do you guys want to use toggle switch or remote control to operate the lights ?

I probably would leave the toggle switch to the customer to buy locally. There are so many different styles.

I have a remote setup not being used but prefer a simple toggle for the lights

Hmmm I was just thinking about these. Each way has its advantages and disadvantages. With the wireless you have more options if people are gunna have it for show. But real use, just on and off is fine.

Maybe offer both styles?

I had remote lights in my Honda , it became a burden because I would accIdently hit the button then have to walk out to turn it off, so a simple on/off to me is better

I'd vote for toggle switch set up. I've already got my switch panel, I just need more things to plug into it.

I doubt I would ever have a need for any but knowing the guys here it is about function over form.
running wires through the firewall or the floor board or for some even the roof is no biggie.

A remote is nice but if it is going to add significantly to the cost I doubt they go for it.
The guys in the show-n-shine section on GMT or Trailvoy would love them some remotes though!

Toggle switch.

Make it reasonable in price and I'll buy a set for each truck.

I am going to create a bill of materials for the kit and crunch some numbers in the next few days. I 'll post a thread with pictures and price next week some time. Have a great weekend
