The other site (trailvoy) has a thriving audio forum with more specialists.

I know there is a harness that you can get that will allow you to use the OnStar, Bose, etc, with an aftermarket head unit... that is about my knowledge of it, though.

Yes, you will need an adapter harness that is onstar compatible

I had one of the adapters you guys are talking about. It's called a class 2 bus interface, and it's complete junk.

But if you aren't into running new wires and possibly replacing speakers, it's your only option.

You can get a harness cheaper than $75. I got mine for around $40 used but it was fine. I would sell it to you, but I stripped it out for the wire when I was we working my buddy's jeep.

They also have one that allows you to keep your steering wheel audio controls which I do have. The good thing about these harnesses is that they are super easy to install.

This being OFFROAD tb, maybe we should add to the discussion water/mud/dirt/dust resistant head units?

My recommendation is forgo the CD unit next time, get something with a usb port, and just use a flash drive for all your music. Much more durable, because I keep losing/scratching/melting CDs. Something perhaps like this:

I have a CD that's been stuck inside my head unit since like June of 2009.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Maybe we should replace our speakers with marine ones too.

I replaced my head unit with a JVC KD-AHD69. It has the USB port on there, it has only met a couple of CDs right after my wife bought them.

I grabbed the flagship receiver from pioneer. AVIC-110BT Top of the line, and she is a beauty. I love it! Usb, ipod control, and memory card functions just to name a few.

Did it actually melt a cd?
I had a new cd in and it ejected it after a while of playing and said "check cd" on screen, cd was HOT! I have noticed the stereo gets hotter than it use to; is it going bad? anyone else's get extremely hot?
May need to replace stereo.

That's what my firebirds did when it went and now my trailblazer is starting to do the same thing... it gets hot and occasionally doesn't want to take a cd. I suspect it'll be dead by next summer.

I put an alpine with the front USB and AUX jack in the misses car and she hardly uses CDs any more. Haven't decided what I'm going to toss in the TB yet but I've been looking casually.

The gmos-04 is the onstar interface with steering wheel control interface. $75 on amazon. It's what I'm using with my kenwood dnx9980hd. Which is a great all in one unit. Nav/cd/DVD/USB/iPod/backup cam.

Nice info, I installed an aftermarket Stereo and DVD in my truck in '07 cause the OEM sounded like garbage. I had to pay $99 bucks for the onstar situation but my steering wheel controls havent been hooked up since. I also had to tip the tech $10 bucks to deactivate the "Park" control on the DVD player so I could watch DVD's while traveling. My stereo is now going to hell, wont play cd's or DVD's and half the controls dont work, my IPOD and radio are the only parts left that work. I paid an extra $100 bucks for a lifetime warranty from.....wait for it....Circuit City....which is now of course out of business. :wallbash:
