Was covering Occupy Atlanta for my university's newspaper last semester (later promoted to photo editor this semester). Came away with these shots and a bruised neck from getting punched in the throat.

Interesting for sure.

Why is the woman cop videoing the event (second to last photo)?

I was wondering that at first too. I think it's just to keep a record for training later on, cause they don't typically respond with all of these units together (foot patrol, SWAT, APEX, and riot squad).

I think fire hoses would be a good deterrent to protesters :-)

In the interest of being fair and balanced, here are some pictures of a Myrtle Beach Tea Party.

Notice the lack of, or need for "stormtroopers".
Working in Manhattan, I got to see OWS up close. Not wanting to get too political, lets just say that after the Tea Party Rally in Myrtle Beach, no one had to pick up American Flags from the ground like they had to do in NYC.

True, true. I'm definitely not involved in the Occupy movement at all, it was just a story to cover lol.

I would assume for training and for liability. When you have instances like the college kids that were pepper sprayed it would be nice for the department to have full video to give as a response. In the pepper spray case the common video was the people sitting there and just getting sprayed for no reason, in the extended version the police told them they couldn't be there, asked them to leave, the people sitting asked "what if I don't" and the police said "they'd be pepper sprayed". then they refused to leave and were pepper sprayed.

FYI cops video for the same reason Joe public does. Its to combat any maniuplated version that may show up later, possible bring charges to perps later and it also keeps the rank and file from doing something stupid.

You're right about the police keeping their own record of events and keeping track of who was there. Look at the cop behind the female cop who was videotaping Cody as he was taking this picture. I'm sure they had the entire route covered.

Good eye, I went through these (and plenty other) photos a bunch, and never noticed that other cop filming me.
