What do you think about having it optional on the profile page (viewable by members only), but not on the left bar?

We've been trying to keep he left bar / user details clean, yet efficient use of space.

It would be cool to see someone's name at a glance if they choose to have it shown. I often like responding to a post by name, and it wouldn't be as easy/worthwhile if I have to click-click-back.

Some of our members have taken to the practice of placing your name in your signature, which makes a lot of sense to me.

I like the name in the sig... but some won't like that. A field in the profile for name would be cool, as long as its only available to members (for the security freaks)... I can't say how easy a task like that is for the admins.

I don't know what Teebes has up his sleeves, but I'm not so sure it's possible. Any custom profile tag will be publicly viewable on your profile.

Why would anyone need to hide their identity?... Superman maybe?

I know you could put it in the signature, but it's neat to have a cohesive "at a glance" look at all of someones information. It may help build a community a little tighter as well if people have a spot to put their name and feel compelled rather than an active choice to enter it into the signature. :angry whip:

I'm pretty sure profile contents are not viewable by the general public. You must be an authenticated member. You have an example; maybe I'm overlooking one?

I, for one, have no problem with a first-name display in the left area...

The problem is that any custom profile tag we create will be posted to both the profile, and wherever they post. Remember, we tried that during like the first week with the modification text areas (similar to the OS)... thus why we ended up with the 'build threads'.

If you log out, you can't access any member's profiles, but you can still see the custom profile tags next to their posts. A name tag entry would act the same way.

With the new forum upgrades we inherited some new functionality. One of the new options is the ability to have profile fields post to the profile, and not to every post.

So I've added in a Name field, as you have requested. Go into your "User Control Panel" and click "Profile" on the left to add in your name.

This field will only be viewable by members when they click on the "profile" button beneath your posts.
