ORTB Camping Chat Thread

There have been a few times, I've had random thoughts about camping, and there really hasn't been a place to share them. The regular chat thread seems too hodge-podge, at times. Plus, what I've wanted to say, doesn't really need its own thread. I figured this might be a decent thread to start, to share general camping stuff, without having to start a new thread. Kind of like the gun thread, or the "What did you do to your GMT" thread. If this idea sucks, Mods, feel free to delete this post, and any following info.

I've been looking for a decent axe to add to my camping, and recovery equipment. Just picked this one up tonight, on Amazon, for $17 shipped.



I have the Fiskars version, in hatchet size, and I am very pleased with it. It looks basically identical, only the gray is orange, and the handle is shorter.

Fiskers is good stuff...In fact I gave one of my Fiskars to V7Guy...But I believe they are made "overseas" now days...I dont mean Finland...

Yes, I've got the Fiskars hatchet, as well as the splitting axe that later became the X25, and I also got the X27 splitting axe, last fall. People at TECORE this spring can attest to it chopping very well, also!

Been think of a hammock tent for awhile. Anyone have any real world experience? Tought with the ability to tie off to my bumper, all I need is a tree for a simple camp, but not sure it is that easy in reality.

I don't personally have experience using or sleeping, but my good friend Joe Baker has a Bivy Hammock. I've seen it in person, it's pretty cool and functions as a hammock bivy or just a ground bivy. He used it when we were in the Winds. I forget the brand name. They can usually be a little pricey.

That's true for the firewood, but I'm referring to when I didn't get the chainsaw out, to cut the stuff across the trail.

Sorry guys... No thread to link, or I would've. I picked it up on Amazon, and the seller only had one left in stock. Makes me think they were trying to clear them out, because they weren't a huge seller. It was some police supply place. I'm still a bit skeptical, that the product I get, will be the one described. But, for $17, I figure the gamble is worth it.

As for the hammocks, I've camped in a few that were borrowed, and loved it. Not everyone's cup of tea, though. I'm currently looking at one from Hennessy Hammocks. They seem to be the best I've found, so far.

I've used the Fiskar James02 gave me a good lil bit, I like it. Seems to be well balanced and do the job. I looked all over amazon and couldn't find that gerber for $17 and I already have a big ole splitting axe lol

The tent sounds like a nifty idea, I love layin in a hammock. Not sure how comfy a tent would be though.

They do make insulator pads, but 50-60, would be my cut-off point.

Not to crap on anyone's parade, but I just searches that amazon store, and they have a 91% negative feed back rating. Tons and tons of feedback saying they offer these great deals and than cancel your order. Sometimes re-listing it for twice as much. YMMV

My parade already got rained on... Got that email at about 5:00 this afternoon. Going to Turkey Bay, this weekend, and have bigger fish to fry. I'll explain all, and post the email on Monday. PISSED HERE.

I wouldn't expect this on eBay, a 9% positive feed back would be a major red flag. Not sure your feedback can get anywhere near that low before you are kicked out of eBay.

I was blinded by the price, and had never had s problem in Amazon before. Again, lesson learned, and money was refunded.
