Picked up this cannon ammo case in Fayetteville yesterday($20), it will be my kitchen case.


I had to trim the knobs on the stove a little to make it fit but it will hold all I need for cooking.

I was thinking about getting an old gas stove to go out in my shop to cook fish and stuff and
for when a hurricane comes and the power is out etc. I mentioned it to my dad and he suggested

I've been thinking about making some kind of folding wind shield out of some tin and using it for
my camp stove, or maybe building some kind of carrier that could serve as a wind screen.

I would still use my coleman stove when space is an issue but when space is no issue and I can
take the 20lb propane cylinder I think that little cooker would be ideal.

for vehicle based camping, i have(cant vehicle camp anymore though ) some old coleman camp stove fitted to be able to handle 20 lb. propane tanks, and usually use pots and pans from home to cook, and the mess kit mentioned below to eat from


for when im out hiking, i keep an old military surplus pocket stove and a mess kit,works great for making instant mashed potatoes, easy mac, ramen noodles,canned soup and the like. alot of the time ill take MRE entree's and the heater packs too,you can buy heater packs by the dozen for like 3 bucks and the Entrees for about $1 apiece at cheaper than dirt.
with the mess kit i can also cook on smaller fires. i can pack enough food and the supplies to cook it for a week(2 meals a day) into 2 of the outside pockets on an ALICE pack,if i did only MRE entree's they're heaters and my spoon-knife-fork combo,i could probably pack twice as much food...since the mess kit and pocket stove would not be needed

We use those at the deer hunting cabin I go to(no electricity). They work great. And am I stupid or are they really only $27.95? (or both i guess) It doesn't come with the regulator/hose kit, but still seems very reasonable. And if you make a fold flat wind barrier it would be even more packable.


That little Bass Pro Shop Oven Stove combo is pretty neat too.

yeah, they are cheaply made but seem to work fine.
I'm not sure I have actually used mine yet, just lit it a few times.

i have always been a big fan of the white gas coleman stoves, but recently got a propane one for ease of use. but if im out backpacking i use a jetboil stove.

Might as well throw this out there.

If anybody has any Coleman gas pressure (white gas) stuff they either want to get rid of, in favor of propane, or would like help fixing it and getting it running again, post here or let me know.

It's been a long time hobby of mine to rebuild and refurbish the old stuff back to working condition. The wife isn't so sure when I buy something or drag something else home, but I'm always open to acquire more stuff.

I never could figure out why folks liked the gas > propane until I figured out that if you use them a lot the little propane bottles can get expensive and in the event of things like hurricanes here, you can't find them on the store shelves.

I bought an adapter hose for mine so I can hook it to a big tank.

I use propane lanterns mostly because they throttle back a bit better than white gas. For $15, I got one of the refill adapters years ago, and re-use the 1 lb bottles. There is a significant valve failure rate of 2-3%, which is why a lot of folks advise against refilling them as a safety hazard. But I found the failures always show up right after a fill, so if I leave them outside for a day, and if they lose weight or have an audible hiss, then they get discarded after venting.

I change over from propane to white gas equipment when I know it's going to be below 40 degrees in the morning. Propane just can't crank out the first morning coffee as well as gas when it's 20 degrees. Or run the fold-out oven for cinnamon rolls.

One of the dumbest moves I ever made when I was getting BACK into tenting after 15 years in pop-ups and a Trailmanor, was bringing only a canned BUTANE single-burner unit for our first outing. At 50 degrees (!) it didn't have the vapor pressure to do coffee at all! Useless unit, but cheap. Good for 70 degrees plus.

Along with that pot its a perfect small cooking kit. The stove and a fuel can fit inside the soloist pot great.

We went camping with the scouts this weekend and here's a cheap, low tech oven we used to make apple pie and brownies. It's a cardboard box lined with foil and a wire hanger grate. Worked really well.

UPS dropped off a Colman insta-start gas griddle, this along with my Dutch oven, gas grill should do all my cooking needs. Still wouldn't mind a jet boil.
