Didn't Bill also destroy a splinned disconnect trying to winch/tow someone out in reverse one time?

That was his rear differential. And we're not sure that reverse had much to do with it. It seemed like more of a G80 explosion.

that's right, it gave him a good reason to upgrade to the 8.6.

Just a heads up, try not to pull people out in reverse if you can help it. You can control your vehicle much better if it's going forward, the drive-line handles the power transfer better when going forward, and you have less protection against strap recoil when you're facing the strap.

If I can stay off the trails until I get new tires I should be ok pulling in reverse!

I think you misunderstood. It is never a great idea to perform a dynamic extraction in reverse, no matter the tires.

Even with no traction and not jerking? Maybe I am misunderstanding

Especially with no traction... lol.

To be safe, always try to pull stuck vehicles while moving your vehicle forward. If the stuck vehicle is moving in revers, that is fine.

Yep, it was the G80 carrier that let loose first, best as I can tell from the fragments. I had earlier used reverse to no avail, so I turned about, had my winch on a tree, a strap to the stuck van, and then used way too much throttle to assist. But I was in 4LO, 1st.

What I SHOULD have done is just abandoned the need to be a boy scout, and given the idiot HVAC contractor driver a ride 20 miles to town, where he would have called his boss and perhaps been fired for stupidity. He was a noob still on probation, I was between jobs at the time, and I allowed that to shade my natural caution.

Gotcha. I try to pull forward first and if I have no traction I try in reverse because I have more weight there for better traction.
