OUCH!

Actually, my first though was about binding...

Teebes, you going to post the pic, or email?

The Roadie wrote:Good news about UCA spares is that you only need to carry one. JD and MB - Teebes has a good closeup of the break grain structure. Need expert commentary on if it was possibly salt corrosion cracking or perhaps overextension and upper ball joint jamming that cracked it.

Very odd that it survived all that time and let loose on the road.

I thought I had a suspension problem at a burger joint we had lunch at, so I laid down on the ground to look. In 30 seconds, three people came boiling out of the restaurant to see if I had fallen or something worse. Good to know they cared...... :lurk:

What's Teebes current front suspension lift setup consist of?
11 Silverado LTZ - 6.2L/6l80, 2/3 drop, self tuned
85 Hilux - 3RZ, dual cases, caged, 40s, chromo everything
02 TrailBlazer LTZ - 35s, lockers, balls - Gone but not forgotten - Build

My takeoff BDS units and perhaps Mark's 1/2 spacer on top? I had upgraded my springs with EXT springs, but I don't know the part number because they didn't have a tag and were off Ebay.

But his UCAs hadn't been flipped, and he had run for a short time with the Rough Country outside-the-strut spacer that allows over-extension.

And we all allow the steering knuckle to free fall when we remove struts for upgrades, so the ball joint could stress the UCA mount during the time that the strut isn't there.

I'll submit the first guess:

Teebes just proved that the milled ball joints are stronger than the cast/forged connection on the UCA.

If his ball joints are factory, I would hazard that guess...

What a long weekend :lurk:

First off, another big thank you to Roadie for not only waiting around for 4 hours for the tow truck to show up, but having the spares handy so I could attend some family stuff the following day.

Current setup:
Passenger side UCA replaced maybe 20,000 miles ago.
Drivers side UCA, WAS STILL STOCK
Suspension: EXT springs plus BDS.

Luckily I was able to stop almost instantly after I felt the UCA go. Even more lucky that we were on a straight away and not tucked in some mud canyons, yuck. The knuckle fell forward as it broke away from the UCA, steering was still there though I know something was wrong immediately.

More pics and a youtube video later, busy day at work today...

Hard to tell from those pics.

Is the brown at the top and bottom rust? If so, then it looks like it cracked a while ago and finally gave out.

I'm not really seeing the characteristic striation pattern from fatigue failure - maybe a little from the bottom left of the clamp. From what I can see, most of that looks like brittle overload failure.

It'd be nice to get an even closer shot from head-on.

The only video I snagged, Roadie on one of the many descents. This is not the REALLY steep one, but a vid not the less:

Any benefit to running a weld bead around that area for a little extra material there? Or would it do more harm by screwing with any temper the metal might have?

I think that could only serve to do harm by adding possible fracture initiation points.

Great pics and videos. Those steep hills are fun. Looks like a great area to play.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

FINALLY! I built a new computer for Christmas that can do decent video editing and not take hours to save. Or require staying late at work to use the real good ones there.

First of the new videos from my backlog. The one of Teebes going down the steep hill in the calendar shot is around minute 13.

That place is very interesting looking - very barren. Pretty crazy formations in that area too... is it all just due to water erosion?
