Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Painted Rims

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

Did some work last night trying to get a bit more of that "mean" look.

For anyone who wants to know how I did this, here's the layout:

Materials:
(in order of use)

1. Remove wheels from vehicle
2. Wash/scrub wheels down with dish soap and allow to dry
3. Clean with Duplicolor Prep Spray
4. Sand down entire surface of wheel to be painted
5. Clean with Duplicolor Prep Spray (again)
6. Use index cards to block overspray by inserting them between the tire and the rim around the diameter of the wheel
7. Apply 3 coats of primer, allowing 10 minutes between each coat, waiting 30 minutes after last coat before next step
8. Apply 3 coats of Duplicolor wheel paint, allowing 10 minutes between each coat, waiting 30 minutes after last coat before next step
9. Apply 3 coats of Rustoleum high temp paint, allowing 10 minutes between each coat, waiting 30 minutes after last coat before next step
10. Apply 3 coats of Clear Coat, allowing 10 minutes between each coat, waiting 30 minutes after last coat before next step
11. allow to dry for 24 hours (where you live/your exact weather conditions can affect needed time)

Damn. Good write up. I was much lazier when i painted my rims...
i just did a quick scuff job with a drill/wire brush attachment, then 2 coats of black plastidip. I bet yours is going to hold up a lot better and longer than mine.

Well done.

Thanks! I thought about plastidip, but I wanted more durability out of it. I hope it lasts, I was up all night painting!

I scrubbed mine down with a soapy sponge and sprayed it with self-etching primer. I didn't think it would last, but its been over 5 years now and the only scratches are around the center cover. If I ever decide to re-spray them, I have a sandblaster now, and will probably include a clearcoat.

Just get the biggest $@%# air compressor you can find. I was limited on space and had to settle for a 29-gal tank and an output of around 6cfm@90psi -- it's working fine for the motorcycle parts, but it's a good thing my gun has a really small hopper.
