Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Air Box

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by JD8181 » Sun Jun 07, 2015 7:11 pm

I have seen a lot of you guys have hollowed out your air boxes. Did you notice any differences at all (mpg, power, sound, etc.)? I am currently running the stock box with a k&n filter. Or should I just make myself a cold air intake? Or leave it stock? Thanks for the input. I'm looking for some more mods to do. I just got my pmc of nc and have been very happy with it so far.

I made a homemade CAI out of PVC pipe. Never really paid attention to MPG or anything of that sort. I made it a bit louder on WOT

I gutted my stock box and opened up the front some with the Green filter. I do not hear any difference. The ole butt dyno says it added ridiculous power, but I think my head was cheating on the dyno pulls. Not much difference in reality. I do not know if it helps the MPG, but the combo of all the stuff I have done has left me really happy with my MPG.

When I get around to deleting the secondary air I am thinking I may delete the resonator as well which may make it louder, but for a couple bucks I will likely try it.

I've found I generally don't notice engine bay stuff that supposedly makes things "better". I'm sure there's a subset of the population that does.

Been waiting for dyno pulls forever. As we all know, the butt dyno is always telling us that was +20hp LOL

So from the sound of it it might be just a waste of time? Sounding like there are really no pros or cons.

I would delete the air silencer before gutting the box. The intake will be louder and you can hear the engine. Not much on the butt dyno but you can listen to the engine respond to throttle input.

Yeah I'm going to do a resonator delete here really soon. I'm just debating on which tip do I want and do I want it out the rear or side (I'm leaning towards the side)

I did a PVC CAI and got rid of the resonator. There was definitely a lot more engine noise after that. Then I started wondering why I was using 3" pipe leading to the throttle-body, but there was only a 2" hole in the air box for fresh air to come in... so I cut a second 2" hole and used a heat gun to shape a piece of pipe so I could pick fresh air from in front of the radiator. Adding this new hole actually quieted the engine noise. I never gutted my airbox, but I did get one of the conical oiled filters, which seems to really open up a lot more space for the air to actually get to the filter.

Yeah the butt-dyno is unreliable, but mine says that I gained a surge of passing-power at around 45mph. When the original pipe came apart and I had to go back to stock for a couple weeks (after having the original in place for over a year), it felt sluggish to me. I didn't notice any difference at all in my MPG.
