Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Lift problem??

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by JD8181 » Sun Feb 01, 2015 11:52 pm

I added a Markmc 3" lift with hd bilstein up front and skyjacker 8030's in the rear not to long after I got it lifted I start to hear a noise when I would hit a bump in the rear end. I got under the tb today and the only thing I could see was what looked to be this bar in the picture is hitting the exhaust right before it goes up and over the axle. Does this look normal or is it hitting like it looks like it is to me. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do?

It's possible. It looks like it's an inch or so which typically doesn't cause a problem. Is it a rattling sound? Can you find any broken exhaust hangers?

That part of the exhaust is flattened like that in all of em

Most commonly it's the shock bolts that have loosened up.

Here's a pic of mine for reference...

Post a pic of your rear lower shock mount.
Did you add washers on both sides of the shock mount bushing tube to take up the gap?

Yes I have washer in the rear for spacing. I lowered the spare and retightened it and checked all the lugs. I recognized today I can only hear it at low speeds.

Be sure the top and bottom shock mounting bolts are tight. I didn't tighten down my tops enough and they made some noise as the shock sleeve bounced around on the bolt shank.

Yeah they are tight. I double checked them tonight too. And checked all the lugs too. They were also tight. We will see if the spare tire makes any difference. Maybe it could be the hitch cover too

I think I have it narrowed down to 1 of 2 things. Either the fuel line that goes down from the gas cap to the tank. There is a plastic push pin on the rear frame rail that holds the line still and it has a little play in it. Or the heat shield that's around the gas tank has a little play too. I'm going to try to fix one at a time and see which one it is.

I'm going to say it's still the factory bolts hitting the larger shock bushing sleeves. I swapped mine out to 1/2" and cured the problem.

Opeth I will have to switch the bolts out for 1/2 bolt too. Do you know what length you used?

Oh crap, my secret is out!

I don't remember the length I used, I brought the bolt to lowes and grabbed one that was similar length. I bought both uppers and lowers.

Ok I think I've got it figured up. I checked the top bolts and they were both right. But I bought some 1/2" bolts for the bottom and found the one of them was snug but not tight. I tightened it up and the noise seem to go away.

I had skyjacker in the rear as well. I had a bad noise and a hard hit, going over bumps... the rear shocks were completely compressed. I replaced them with new stockers. Problem solved.
